In his morph as the dominatrix nurse, he makes it "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" territory, channelling Nurse Ratched from the 1975 film.
And Broadbent ranges from racist 19th century sea captain to addled old composer to the dotty publisher who has to stage a prison break to escape a British nursing that draws on “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” for inspiration.
It's a karmic treadmill that takes a compendium of cinematic references — Amistad, Amadeus, The China Syndrome, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Blade Runner, Soylent Green and Mad Max — and turns them into a narrative collage of pop culture and fortune-cookie philosophy.
British actor Jim Sturgess is given cosmetic eye folds to look Asian, and Hugo Weaving plays a nasty female nurse, reminiscent of Nurse Ratched in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest .
Other stories recall E.M. Forster (1936 Cambridge, where a young gay schemer played by Ben Whishaw provides crucial assistance to an aging composer played by Jim Broadbent), “Blade Runner” (23rd-century Seoul, where a clone-waitress played by Doona Bae tries to break free of her evil corporate masters with the help of a dashing young freedom fighter played by Jim Sturgess), “Amistad” (on the high seas of 1849, a slave played by David Gyasi educates Sturgess’ young attorney on the evils of plantation life) and “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” (Broadbent and pals scheme to escape from a Nurse Ratched-like figure, played by Hugo Weaving, holding them prisoner at an old-folks home in 2012).
I did like the transformation of Hugo Weaving into a female nurse as mean as Nurse Ratched from One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.
The Miseducation of Cameron Post (2018)

While Akhavan – who also cowrites the screenplay with Cecilia Frugiuele, based on the book of the same name by Emily M. Danforth – is clearly criticizing the practice of reforming these teens, most of The Miseducation of Cameron Post plays more like Saved! then One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest-meets-Jesus Camp.
Rather than Ratched's vindictive streak that emerges toward the end of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," Marsh (Ehle), the sister of the camp's guitar strumming 'convert' Reverend Rick (John Gallagher Jr.), uses the proximity to her first victim as a suffocating reminder that her success rate is undeniable.
Lydia isn’t in the same martinet class as Nurse Ratched of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, but a streak of cruelty underscores her suppressive sternness.
Rather like 1999’s But I’m A Cheerleader, The Miseducation Of Cameron Post takes the non-conformist spirit of One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest and transplants it to a ‘conversion therapy’ summer camp.

Will Prot help the other patients overcome their own problems, a la "One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest"?
Clearly not satisfied with this corker of a storyline — one that could fill a whole tv series, never mind a movie — director Iain Softley inserts a One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest-type subplot in which Prot helps his fellow mental institutionees find help and redemption in quirkily unconventional ways.
An added wrinkle is that in his spare time Prot tries to mentally balance the other patients in his ward (the usual "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" knockoffs), an attempt that increasingly unsettles Dr. Powell.
Essentially a psychological detective story mixed with mental institution elements from previous pictures such as "Awakenings" and "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," the film is best when Spacey's Prot amusedly responds to Bridges' character doing the inquisitive psychiatrist bit.
There are obvious ties to "Starman" (starring, coincidentally, Jeff Bridges as the visitor from another planet) for the space alien perspective and films like "Awakenings" and "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" for the psychiatric institution viewpoint.
These are the typical patients one finds in films like "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," "28 Days," etc.
Wolf (2021)

You might think of the picture as having a vibe not unlike “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” but with a distinctly unorthodox added ingredient.
“Wolf” is more cynical, presenting True You as a sadistic prison from which Jakob needs to escape, à la “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” or “The Miseducation of Cameron Post.”
And while there are shades of 1975’s “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” Biancheri can’t find a way to balance her initially edgy ideas with horrifying conversion therapy realities.
From a cinematic standpoint, Wolf takes a bit from Milos Forman’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest or more recently Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Lobster .
MacKay’s Jakob gets into a classic “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” war of wills with the unbending Dr. Mann.
Written and directed by Biancheri, “Wolf,” a surreal narrative exploring identity, is a cross between Yorgos Lanthimos’ “The Lobster” and Miloš Forman’s “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.”

Oftentimes incorrectly assumed to be depressing as opposed to uplifting (due to the prison violence and sporadic iniquities akin to those in “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”), it is, in actuality, a magnificently hopeful, inspiring work of art.
Bob Gunton harkens to villains like Nurse Ratchet from One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest …you just love to hate him.
But to call "The Shawshank Redemption" a prison picture is as accurate as calling "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" a hospital picture.

The obvious touchstone for “It’s Kind of a Funny Story” is “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” Milos Forman’s classic film based on Ken Kesey’s breakthrough novel.
Running the gamut from "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" to "Girl, Interrupted," psych ward movies have long captured the imagination of the world's filmmakers.
And yet just a few hours after that conversation, I found myself seriously debating getting up and walking out of "It's Kind Of A Funny Story," an agonizingly phony piece of work that struggles to be a sort of "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" for teenagers, but which ends up regurgitating platitudes in place of any genuine insight or emotion.
This contrivance means that Craig gets to befriend messed-up grown ups like Bobby (Zack Galiflanakis, in a mellower take on One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest's Randle McMurphy) and share a room with a muttering Egyptian man named Muqtada (Bernard White) while at the same time falling for the teenaged cutter Noelle (Emma Roberts) down the hall.
A sweet-natured One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest for the teen set, It's Kind of a Funny Story is based on a young-adult novel, so clichés can be expected.

It aspires for a "Jacob's Ladder" tone, wants a political agenda in the mode of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" and suffers from too many gratuitous flashback sequences to a pair of shooting incidents.
There is an air of trying to cover too much ground in “The Jacket” as it combines the essence of such films as “Altered States” and “Jacob’s Ladder” and includes, at least on a cursory level, “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.”
If you’ve enjoyed movies like Slaughterhouse 5, D.O.A., 12 Monkeys or One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, then you probably shouldn’t bother with The Jacket until it comes out on DVD.
The hospital is populated with “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” characters and has a maverick doctor in its midst.
The Jacket essentially plays out as two movies: a slow-paced One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest style drama, and a bizarre, confusing sci-fi tale with elements of romance.
The Jacket is plainly derivative of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Jacob’s Ladder, juiced up with interesting visuals, fine performances — and some chronological monkey-business.

And it’s the propulsive force of her bracing spite and nastiness that allows us, for a time at least, to overlook the derivative story ( Shock Corridor and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest loom large) and the gaping plot chasms.
In Unsane, the paternalistic mental institution becomes a ripe site for these ideas – unlike the best-known psychiatric conspiracy film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, here lies the intersection of pathology and misogyny, for a woman’s loss of control over her life and her mind.
The third act hurtles with developments akin to vintage Brian De Palma misanthropy, and the screenplay (by Soderbergh confederates Jonathan Bernstein and James Greer) is a perfidious mélange of Polanski (“Repulsion,” “Rosemary’s Baby”), Forman (“One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest”) and 1970s paranoia melodramas, especially “Three Days of the Condor,” the final shot of which is copied in full .
However, the screenwriting tandem of Jonathan Bernstein and James Greer ( The Spy Next Door ) starts with a One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest vibe before offering a muddled exploration of knee-jerk psychology and a half-hearted indictment of greed and corruption within the health insurance industry.
Inside, the atmosphere is only a shade tamer than “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” or “Shock Corridor.”
That story would be fascinating in and of itself, Soderbergh and his writers giving things a surreal, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest meets Shock Corridor feel I can’t help but think is intentional.
Thus follows the usual misunderstanding and/or breakup scenes, and a few racing-through-traffic sequences, but thankfully the film winds up with something borrowed loosely from the Broadway play "Hair" that should not be missed.
Personally, I found the entire movie filled with the juice of the prune (apart from the musical finale, which mostly made me want to watch Milos Forman’s Hair).
With a title like The 40 Year Old Virgin (and with a marketing campaign that borders on genius), you know that, as with other "losin' it" pictures (Losin' It, Revenge of the Nerds , Hardbodies, The Last American Virgin , and on and on), the hero's going to get laid--most often to a fireworks accompaniment (or selections from Hair, as the case may be).

What Movies Will It Remind You Of?: The Mad Woman’s Ball sometimes feels like a feminist take on One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest , but there’s so much more to it than that.
Imagine Milos Forman’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest , reimagined in 19th Century Paris, in an all-female institution, and you’ll have a pretty good notion of what to expect.
Perceiving her as the antagonist, we’re tapping into familiar tropes, in particular, Mildred Ratched (Louise Fletcher) and Randle Patrick McMurphy (Jack Nicolson), from One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (Forman, 1975).
Those who do not fit into society—think of Randle Patrick McMurphy from the movie “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” who chose to serve a sentence in a psychiatric hospital instead of prison—are often bullied and persecuted by those who are in charge of supervising them.
What follows is something of a Gallic, feminist One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest with a supernatural twist, both engaging and disturbing.

While Phillips’ cast is riddled with character actors whose unique faces would rival the cast of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest it’s mostly an individual piece.
Some of the most iconic villains in cinema are the ones with no backstory, and that's what makes them so terrifying; we know nothing about them: Michael Myers, Heath Ledger's Joker, the killers in The Strangers , One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest 's Nurse Ratched.
His film shares DNA with 70’s classics such as Taxi Driver and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.
From the first time we meet Daniel Brühl’s Niki Lauda, the man who will become Hunt’s biggest rival, we’re immediately reminded of F. Murray Abraham’s Saleri from “Amadeus” – a man so bitter about the success of his rival that he becomes obsessed with showing that he’s the better man and racer.
At heart it’s “Amadeus” on wheels, only this time Salieri is the Austrian.
Screenwriter Peter Morgan sets the stage for a high-octane riff on Amadeus, with Lauda’s intense preparations undone time and again by Hunt’s nonchalant, instinctive genius.
As McMoon, The Big Bang Theory’s Simon Helberg is perfectly cast, an accomplished pianist whose nervous laugh not only echoes Tom Hulce’s cackle in Amadeus , but also weirdly mirrors the shriek with which Streep hits a high C. Hugh Grant is on career-best form as Florence’s partner/manager St Clair Bayfield, a self-proclaimed “eminent actor and monologist” (he has performed Hamlet many times, although sadly “not as yet in the principal role”) whose recitals provide an appetiser to Jenkins’s own thrillingly bonkers tableaux vivants – winged set pieces mounted for the “Verdi Club”.
Murray Abraham) and a quizzically earnest young priest brought to mind scenes shared by George Burns and Richard Benjamin in the film version of Simon’s comedy; and I could also detect something in the curl of Abraham’s lower lip and the rhythmic jabbing of his index finger to recall Robert Preston as, aptly, Professor Harold Hill in The Music Man.
Shock Corridor (1963)

The author of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Ken Kesey, was said to have been inspired by Samuel Fuller’s work, and this film seems to back that up.
We are at least spared the insipid attempts of pictures like One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest to preciously romanticize the mentally addled; Fuller's asylum does not become the staging area for any transcendent spirit of rebellion, or any faux-realizations that in a crazy world, it's the crazies who are sane.
Johnny convinces the psychiatrist that he has deep underlying sexual conflicts about his "sister," especially after his "acute schizophrenic" episode that occurs when discussing Cathy (imagine Jack Nicolson's "crazy" act in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest as far more controlled).
Besides which, Forman’s decision should be interpreted as consciously reflecting Mozart’s, when he liberated opera from the mellifluous tyranny of the Italian language by setting Die Entführung aus dem Serail to a German text; which is, in turn, why The Magic Flute, concocted by its librettist Schikaneder as a populist fairy-tale pantomime, is sung in English in the film (and conducted by its composer in a manner more appropriate to Geraldo than Gesualdo).
Undoubtedly, the resulting nausea has contributed to my conviction that Amadeus needs an additional 20 minutes running time like The Magic Flute needs a drum solo.
It’s hard to watch René Féret’s historical drama Mozart’s Sister without thinking of the Oscar-winning 1984 biopic Amadeus , which uses Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart as a springboard to consider the sad case of those who can recognize genius, but can’t replicate it.
In heavily outlining the tragedies and injustices that befell the musically gifted older sister of Wolfgang "Amadeus," writer-director René Féret underplays the most interesting elements in this story of Maria Anna "Nannerl" Mozart.
It’s not an easy crowd-pleaser like Miloš Forman’s Amadeus (1984), nor is it as deliberately odd as Paul Morrissey’s Beethoven’s Nephew (1985), but René Féret’s Mozart’s Sister invites comparisons to both.
The Mustang (2019)

Randle McMurphy would have leapt at that opportunity, and “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” (1975) comes to mind again at the end of the film, which is also when you’re reminded that one of the main reasons characters in a movie bond with horses (or any animal) is to get an audience to cry.
