Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma portrays Billy as a “Norma Desmond”-type, channelling the eccentric and secretive qualities from the Sunset Boulevard character.
Directly channelling Gloria Swanson’s tragic, forgotten star Norma Desmond from Sunset Boulevard (1950), she moves across the screen wearing a velvet turban and full makeup with a hypnotic grace and power that commands attention from minute one.
Parallels to Sunset Boulevard’s Norma Desmond are verbally highlighted more than once, as Billy seems to be an enigma living in the ghost of a former life.
Billy swans about in her caftans and turbans, a scream-queen Norma Desmond living in a perfectly preserved museum to her erstwhile stardom (and foundational trauma). Kris, being a compulsive cinephile, privately makes the Sunset Boulevard comparison to her partner, but in a moment of self-doubting anxiety, she later pretends not to know the character’s name in front of Billy.

Kris Williams (Hannah Einbinder) is a hot young indie-film director tapped to remake Camp Miasma, a slasher film series in the vein of Friday the 13th or Halloween.
If, in the likes of Halloween and Friday the 13th, titillation and puritanism went hand in hand—so that sex, especially as experienced by horny teenagers, was gruesomely punished—Camp Miasma sees the slasher itself as a perverse pathway toward sexual satisfaction.

Taking inspiration from the aforementioned Candyman , some stylistic elements of Unfriended and Paranormal Activity (referenced), Bo Burnham’s Eighth Grade , and a heavy helping of creepypasta, We’re All Going to the World’s Fair simultaneously is wholly unique and a fuzzy hodgepodge of ideas and an unclear sense of full direction.

In lesser hands, all of this could become something of a Paranormal Activity meets Unfriended clone with just a dash of Japanese cyberpunk horror reminiscent of Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s 2001 classic Pulse .
Long stretches unfold from the vantage of the girl’s webcam, and Casey draws readily on the visual language of horror for her vlogs, at one point executing a reasonably chilling riff on the overnight surveillance thrills of Paranormal Activity .
As much as Casey wants to live in her own “Paranormal Activity” sequel, “We’re All Going to the World’s Fair” does not take the path of least resistance.

There are some echoes of “Poltergeist” (1982) but “I Saw the TV Glow” is less a horror movie, and more of a meditation on conveying the existential crisis that tons of people feel in their isolated corners of the world that have no place for anyone who is different, cannot stick to the norms, felt suffocated and never felt at home with their family or in their native town so they had to run away or stayed and died slowly.
The television set has a proud place in horror history as a conduit to various twilight zones: think of Heather O’Rourke silhouetted by static in Poltergeist, or James Woods being hungrily devoured by the screen in Videodrome, or the dripping, dark-haired wraith from The Ring, arms bent and splayed as she crawls inexorably into the third dimension.

The movie itself cites Shelley Duvall at one point and, while horror fans might recall the horrendous emotional trauma the actor endured while making Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining as our own expression of knowledge, we lose touch with the fact that a real person went through real trauma that fundamentally impacted them forever.

After its Cannes premiere, critics were throwing around comparisons to Portrait of a Lady on Fire, and while both are interrogations of what it means to be both the observer and the observed when it comes to art, the tensions in Portrait of a Lady on Fire are scalding.
The director also compared the film’s concept to the acclaimed French movie, Portrait of a Lady on Fire set in a Friday the 13th sequel.
This led Schoenbrun to create a fully realized, Buffy-like show for TV Glow called The Pink Opaque, and their latest similarly develops Miasma‘s lore in engrossing detail.
Unlike their previous features, Schoenbrun has fun exercising their slasher proficiency, just as they did with their Buffy love on TV Glow.
