What critics compared Mutiny on the Bounty to
Kon-Tiki, though never overtly stealing, mirrors the most effective aspects of films like Cast Away, Jaws and Mutiny on the Bounty.
One of the film's screenwriters was no less than William Faulkner; the others were Jules Furthman, responsible for other vintage classics like Mutiny on the Bounty, Nightmare Alley and Rio Bravo, and Leigh Brackett, whose final screen credit would come decades later in the form of The Empire Strikes Back.
Tarantino and his cinematographer Robert Richardson shot the film in Ultra Panavision 70, a basically dead format that was used on only a few films, such as “Mutiny on the Bounty.”
I'm grateful that the script managed not to burden Crowe with Charles Laughton's classic Mutiny on the Bounty outburst, "You call yourselves seamen?"
It should be noted that MASTER AND COMMANDER is by no means a disaster like Waterworld; if you're looking for filmic comparisons, think Das Boot minus the gripping tension, or Mutiny on the Bounty minus the mutiny.

During the first few minutes, I thought I'd walked into a modern rendering of Mutiny on the Bounty, and I'm still uncertain how those opening scenes, which recur throughout the movie, fit into the rest of the story.
Gray doesn’t even give the adventure of the story untainted glory but he gives what could have been an easy-bake nostalgia trip to Hollywood classicism—a la the original Mutiny on the Bounty—into something whole contemplative, resonantly melancholic, wise, and cuttingly personal.

It’s a shame we don’t quite get a more effective take on Mutiny on the Bounty from Östlund…
