It’s neither Jaws-scary nor Tremors-funny, but genre-movie fans in 1999 did have a chance to feast on the year’s talkiest, most neurotic horror movie.
Nor is it fun and campy like "Tremors," the 1990 film that featured desert burrowing creatures that kept most of its cast on top of rocks, vehicles and buildings.
But it's a dumb, forced attempt at camp horror that falls woefully far short of such films as Tremors and An American Werewolf in London.
Lake Placid doesn't have the scares of Alien, nor the high-mindedness of Jurassic Park, but it is as goofy and fun as Tremors or Anaconda.
Lake Placid is a tart comedy of human folly layered atop a nonsensical horror-thriller -- à la Tremors or Piranha.
"Halloween H20," the twentieth-anniversary sequel, which director Steve Miner deadpans is "the only sequel - what other films?" is a tribute: by executive producer Kevin Williamson, whose "Scream" series was inspired by the first movie; by star Jamie Lee Curtis, who always felt Laurie Strode had never gotten her face-to-face closure with the terror of Haddonfield; and most importantly, by Miramax's Dimension Pictures, which probably would not exist if it were not for "Halloween" breaking ground so many years ago.
Curtis came up with the idea for this seventh film in the series, an homage to the original done in the style of Scream (1996).
With it feeling more akin to the "Scream" series of movies, which is not really a surprise with Kevin Williamson on board as a producer, "Halloween H20" provides plenty of shocks; a few horror in jokes and bucks the trend where not everyone becomes dispensable.
Taking it’s cue from the Scream series, along with a re-write from scribe Kevin Williamson, H20 manages to pay homage and reboot the series at the same time.
"Halloween H20" is yet another sequel that cannot match up to the glories of its precursor and, in fact, is considerably less hair-raising than recent horror films like "Scream," "Scream 2," and even "Mimic."
In this seventh instalment of the Halloween franchise, Friday the 13th veteran Steve Miner and Scream writer Kevin Williamson made their bold decisions by ignoring every event that has occurred over the course of three previous sequels (Halloween 4, 5 and 6).
Toni Erdmann is a whacked out, heartwarming-yet-moderately perverse combination of My Father the Hero and Y Tu Mamá Tambien , a father-daughter tragi-comedy that’s also a comment on the generation gap and the broken promises of globalization.

It’s the Halloween H20 of Scream movies, a heartless cash-grab sequel that brings back a genre legend in something that wants so badly to be Scream that it bleeds itself dry.
I believe it was Wes Craven who first had the brilliant idea to combine horror and comedy with A Nightmare on Elm Street back in 1984.
Janiak still makes time to reference horror classics, swapping out Scream for Friday the 13th Part 2 , but this film is markedly better at approximating the thrills of its reference point.
It’s not quite a betrayal on par with Alice being killed off at the start of Friday the 13th Part 2 (1981) or Newt and Hicks being murdered during the opening credits of Alien 3 (1992), but it’s still more than a little dispiriting.

Once the cat's out of the bag — or the shark's out of the trench, take your pick — the colossal creature is impressive for its sheer size, like the king-size monsters in the like-minded "Anaconda" and "Lake Placid."
This should be a bloody schlock-fest a la Lake Placid, but instead it’s a weirdly tame survival movie.
This is the era that gave us movies like Anaconda , Lake Placid , Deep Rising (check out our episode on that!), and Deep Blue Sea .
The Meg doesn’t even threaten the legacy of Lake Placid, much less Jaws.
They don’t have to be “good” in the narrative sense, but they should be thrilling as some of the best “escapist” movies revolve around bioengineered sharks (“Deep Blue Sea”), giant snakes (“Anaconda”) and crocodiles (“Lake Placid”).
If Moonfall were funnier, satirical and campy in tone, it could've been as fun and entertaining as Lake Placid or the recent end-of-the-world satire, Don't Look Up.
Among these is a sequence in which a pile of crocodiles go berserk, kicking off the plagues by turning the Nile into Lake Placid.
Slither calls to mind Tremors , Twin Peaks and Lake Placid as much as Night of the Living Dead .
