Back in the US, Jeff Goldblum’s Dr Ian Malcolm (who appeared in the very first Jurassic Park a quarter of a century ago), is warning the politicians that humanity is on the verge of “man-made cataclysmic change”.
This mission, staged in inclement weather, does not go as planned, and it is gloriously staged, something out of classic “Jurassic Park.”
She's recruited by Eli Mills (Rafe Spall), an agent of billionaire Benjamin Lockwood (James Cromwell), Richard Hammond's original partner in Jurassic Park.
Carrying a familiar amber/mosquito-topped cane and a weary sense of resignation, James Cromwell appears as a former partner/obvious substitute for Jurassic Park’s John Hammond (the late Richard Attenborough).
It’s been three years since life found a way to reboot the Jurassic Park franchise in the form of Jurassic World, a disguised remake (both of Park and Jaws 3) that doubled as a funny on paper in-joke about resorting to desperate measures to renew interest in an old idea.
Here we are, 25 years on from the release of the original Jurassic Park film, and the desire for dinosaurs is as unrelenting as it was back in 1993.
Pratt downplays the cowboy charisma that helped make the human side of Jurassic World tolerable, but Owen remains cocksure enough to set the tone for developments to come: When, after arriving on Isla Nublar, the two realize there's a plan afoot to steal dinosaurs and sell them for all sorts of nefarious purposes, Claire and Owen must sneak into and sabotage the effort much like Indy did with those Nazi submarines in Raiders of the Lost Ark.
This recalls bits of Raiders of the Lost Ark not just visually but also emotionally, as Claire and Owen resolve to stop bad guys who have precisely the opposite of the entire planet’s best interests at heart (never mind the dinos’ best interests!).
Among the ones I counted, and I doubtless missed some, were "Citizen Kane" (!), "The Shining" and, again and again, "Raiders of the Lost Ark." There's also a shot near the end of the film of a dinosaur on the roof of the mansion framed against the moon that should be ridiculous, and kind of is, but is also breathtaking.
There are even clever callbacks to films like Raiders of the Lost Ark, like when Owen rushes toward the camera, shouting that everyone must run from the danger right behind him.
There's far too many recalls, riffs and familiar beats from both the earlier movies and other Steven Spielberg tales (although at least one Raiders of the Lost Ark rip-off will raise a wry smile).
The first half of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom rattles along like an homage to Raiders of the Lost Ark and by the time you can finally catch your breath, the action has moved from the island and on to the masterplan devised by the movie's baddies.
When the Jurassic Park franchise began, in 1993, it was seen by its original director, Steven Spielberg, as “a good sequel to Jaws.
Spielberg was known for tapping into a sense of childlike wonder in all of his films, from his first blockbuster “Jaws” ( You will believe a killer shark is coming for you!) , to “Indiana Jones” ( You will believe the Ark of the Covenant exists!) , to “E.T.” ( You will believe bicycles can fly! ).

But nobody at the time was going to mistake that flimsy script for the second coming of “Jaws,” until subsequent blockbusters that followed in its wake such as “Twister” and “Independence Day” made “Jurassic Park” look like a model of Aristotelian discipline.
What keeps Fallen Kingdom from scoring a Revenge on the Jaws Scale are the leads.
The introduction is a nasty, exciting little slice of Jaws -lite fun that also nods to Deep Blue Sea .
And there's material that's hard to justify: Whose idea was it to reference to the Schindler's List death-camp shower scene with a mixed pack of dinosaurs?
It’s a genuinely moving moment, something that’s taken straight from the Steven Spielberg “E.T.” playbook.
In this case, rather than resting on the skeletons of films like The Lost World: Jurassic Park, director J.A. Bayona's sequel takes the DNA of movies past and splices it with some wicked new tricks.
The plan is to create a new island sanctuary for the dinos that isn’t a public zoo — yes, that’s pretty much "The Lost World: Jurassic Park" plot, too — and Claire recruits love interest Owen Grady (Chris Pratt), since he’s the only one who can communicate with his super-smart velociraptor, Blue.
“Jurassic World” gave a nice dose of nostalgia for the original “Jurassic Park” movie directed by Steven Spielberg in 1993, but “Fallen Kingdom” (in theaters Friday) falls into the usual sequel trappings that, well, the sequel to “Jurassic World,” “The Lost World: Jurassic Park,” fell into as well.
It bears shocking structural resemblance to Steven Spielberg’s 1997 film The Lost World: Jurassic Park , demonstrating that there are apparently only so many ideas possible within this series (and, indeed, this genre , as the corporate plans for the dinosaurs are really no different than those of Weyland-Yutani for the xenomorphs almost forty years ago).
By the second and third acts, Fallen Kingdom feels more like a landlocked Aliens entry populated by one very clumsy Xenomorph alien than it does a movie about miraculous dinosaurs living among us.
The earlier film’s heroine, Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard), has since become a dinosaur rights activist, and she gets a call from invalid billionaire Benjamin Lockwood (James Cromwell) and his slick assistant Eli Mills (Rafe Spall, looking and acting like his character was cloned from the remnants of Paul Reiser’s corporate sleazeball Carter Burke from Aliens), who have a plan to get the dinosaurs off the dying island and into a new, self-sustaining sanctuary, far from humans.
Nods to King Kong aside, Act II of Fallen Kingdom appears to have been inspired by Aliens, right down to the framing of the shots of the new designer dino, indoraptor, poking its snout at its intended victim.
Why not go the James Cameron’s Aliens route with one of these sequels, get a hard R-rating, and give us a real dinosaur apocalypse?
The contours of Fallen Kingdom ’s second half, where Owen, Claire, and their chums are trapped in a facility with this indoraptor, seem vaguely inspired by Terminator 2 , which took the intimidating villain of the first movie and then turned him into a good guy by pitting him against an even more advanced version of himself.
It also boasts aforementioned nick-of-time escapes from nipping jaws; Owen and Claire’s tepid, almost chemistry-free romance; little kids, in this case Lockwood’s perfectly pug-nosed granddaughter Maisie (Isabella Sermon); being relentlessly run down like a tiny Sigourney Weaver from “Alien”; and explosions.
Not to mention the fact that not since the original Alien has “a corporation wants to harvest animals for weapons” been a fresh premise for heroic conflict.
Bayona stages some horrifying creature sequences, the final third of this flick becoming something of a gothic Alien variation with the Indoraptor stalking the halls of Lockwood’s house in search of its prey.
Fallen Kingdom is the silliest and most purely enjoyable variation on a story that a few big studio productions have been offering recently, in Alien: Covenant, War for the Planet of the Apes, Blade Runner 2049, and, on TV, Westworld — all fantasies leaning toward endings that involve not saving the world for humanity, but ceding it entirely to nonhumans.
From Alien onward, there have been films about shadowy men wanting dangerous creatures to be biological weapons.
His filmography often deals with darker fare, and that tone can be felt in the second half of …Fallen Kingdom, which comes off as a slasher/monster movie of the Alien variety.
But in forgoing the expansive canvas that is Isla Nublar’s wilderness, the screenplay, co-scripted by Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow, sometimes threatens to overshadow the fun dinosaur action with ho-hum human drama.
2015’s “Jurassic World” featured an irresistible premise: the failed dinosaur theme park promised in Steven Spielberg’s 1993 original is finally realized, open and thriving.

Trevorrow and his favored co-writer Derek Connolly deliver a rather un-inspired continuation of the progression of the dinosaurs and their endlessly stagnant journey, so much so they make the re-booted Planet of the Apes properties play like brilliant socio-political pulp manifestos (and the disastrous shadow of Trevorrow’s The Book of Henry still looms large as an indicator of taste and unhinged egotism).
On top of that, there are some decisions made in the story that makes me think Trevorrow was smoking whenever he was on while penning The Book of Henry while writing this nonsense.
Much of the film’s failings fall on Colin “The Book of Henry” Trevorrow’s script, not the least of which being its decision to leave the fictional island of Isla Nublar behind.

As with The Impossible, he cannily dramatizes the raw destructive power of the natural world—there’s occasionally a mythic quality to the mixture of terror and awe that goes on at the island.
For the sequel, “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,” the direction has become exponentially better, thanks to some much-needed fresh blood, director J.A. Bayona (“The Impossible”), and there are times when the joy ride absolutely soars.
Directed by J.A. Bayona (A Monster Calls, The Impossible), this second installment in the rebooted franchise even includes a slow shot of her black combat boot exiting a plane, as if to confirm to viewers: "You see?
Now in 2018, J. A. Bayona (director of The Orphanage, The Impossible and the heartbreaking A Monster Calls) kills the park for good in the middle chapter of this new trilogy.
It often seems like he’s trying to stuff elements of his three previous features into a single blockbuster jolt: There’s the creaky house of his masterful horror movie “The Orphanage,” the child-versus-beast dynamic of “A Monster Calls,” and the apocalyptic natural chaos of his tsunami survival story “The Impossible,” all packed with all the organizing principles of a sandbag.
And Bayona, who gave us the devastating tsunami sequence from 2012’s The Impossible, definitely knows how to bring it.
His strong eye for shadows and love for a more patient pacing help build suspense and make even the most potentially campy concepts—like a Tyrannosaur-velociraptor hybrid lowering itself down from the roof above a young girl’s bedroom window, a la John Badham’s Dracula —have a delicious menace.
Of course, any “rescue” operation headed by the likes of Ted Levine is not to be trusted right off the bat and indeed, it transpires that Owen and Claire have been lured under false pretenses and the dinosaurs are being shipped not to a safe place but to a destination I dare not reveal except to note that viewers who recall the great, if underrated, Marlon Brando comedy “The Freshman” may find themselves flashing back to one of its loopiest moments at a key point.
The scenes ape everything from James Whale’s Frankenstein to Francis Ford Coppola’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

The movie culminates in a dinosaur auction scene that carries echoes of “King Kong,” but it just makes you wish that the air of poignance surrounding these creatures were more sustained.
From here, it’s to Lockwood’s massive mansion grounds, with Eli operating an entire illegal import and sale of ‘effing dinosaurs under his bedridden employer’s nose (magnificent caged marvels wheeled out with reminiscent King Kong grandeur).
Like King Kong, the Jurassic movies have to strike a careful balance, making us fear outsize monsters while also acknowledging audiences’ love for them.
