This isn't a masterpiece like "Back to the Future" or "E.T.", but it would be at home on the same marquee as, say, "Gremlins", "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" and "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure".
In the inanimate-objects-brought-to-life-for-rousing-family-adventure subgenre, Small Soldiers took a hearty swing at summer audiences in 1998, kicking off DreamWorks' slate but playing to middling box office, at $50-plus million.
But the stand-outs are Stiller 's old pal Owen Wilson (who isn’t credited in the film) and Steve Coogan ( Around the World in 80 Days ) as miniaturized figurines— Wilson ’s a Old West diorama cowboy, Coogan , a warmongering Roman emperor—who are constantly at odds with one another.
The film is safe and airbrushed in every regard - even the concept for opening credits, the "floating words over New York" trick that had been greeted with such acclaim just four years earlier in Panic Room , is repeated with all the thematic resonance taken out: now it's just a shiny toy among many shiny toys.

The inclusion of several laugh-out-loud funny interludes perpetuates the movie's engaging vibe, and it does, in the movie's early stages, seem as though The Internship is going to top Wedding Crashers, Vaughn and Wilson's first comedic pairing, in terms of entertainment value.

The kids won’t notice the plot holes (just how would a 19th century cowboy and an ancient Roman know how to let the air out of a tire?), while parents may get a mild chuckle out of a gag based on one of the more famous lines from Brokeback Mountain (2005).
They even manage to slip in a sly "Brokeback Mountain" joke that's funny without being vulgar.
