What critics compared Psycho to
In the cycle of remakes, only Gus Van Sant’s Psycho seems as demented an endeavour as Luca Guadagnino’s Suspiria, which is perhaps the most admirable thing about it.
Plodding literal-mindedness seems to be the solution favored by director Luca Guadagnino, who has chosen to parlay the critical and commercial success of his much beloved “Call Me By Your Name” into the most inexplicable no-win remake scenario since Gus Van Sant followed “Good Will Hunting” with “Psycho.”
That’s inevitable if you’re doing a shot-by-shot remake of a stone cold classic (as Gus Van Sant’s much-reviled but somewhat interesting Psycho experiment proved in 1998).
Beauty and the Beast isn’t Exhibit A of how a remake goes wrong by treating its classic source material as a sacred text (that’s probably Gus Van Sant’s remake of Psycho ), but it’s in the top 10.
Like Gus Van Sant’s ill-fated “Psycho” remake, the result is vaguely watchable with a steady waft of pointlessness.
"Critical" Analysis: Gus Van Zant got a fair amount of shit (and deservedly so) back in 1998 when he directed his shot-for-shot remake of Psycho.

Instead, in a manner similar to Gus Van Sant’s Psycho , it’s merely a high-resolution photocopy devoid of its revered predecessors’ soul.
A film hasn't been this unnecessary since Gus Van Sant dropped one too many tabs of acid and decided to create a shot-for-shot remake of the original Psycho.
I expected him to reinvigorate the tale, of course — I wasn’t anticipating anything like Gus Van Sant’s shot-for-shot remake of Psycho — but Jackson has gone way beyond that.
Despite the resounding failure of Gus Van Sant's Psycho, it at least had the whiff of an understanding of itself as shade and the filmmaker as ghoul.

At 6’5″, the hulking actor certainly has the build to play a small-town serial killer, and the moment he lowers his mask is nothing if not a nod to Gus Van Sant’s shot-for-shot “Psycho” remake (of all things).
