Like any great "Spider-Man" movie, "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" works because of its complex and relatable protagonists and memorable villains.
The Peter Parker version of the character (initially voiced by Chris Pine) sets us off with a narration, deftly spinning the long history of the character into one package (there’s even a loving dig at Sam Raimi’s controversial “Spider-Man 3”).
It starts off with a hilarious callback to the forgettable Spider-Man 3 (2007), acknowledging it with fondness even when it pokes fun at it.

The upside-down kiss with Mary Jane from Raimi’s 2002 original, the train rescue from Spider-Man 2 , and the regrettable Spider-Man 3 dance sequence are all referenced, and when he dies, it serves as a clean break from all other iterations of the character.
I don’t know if I could actually say right now for certain that this one is better than “Spider-Man 2” but if someone were to put forth that argument, I would not necessarily disagree with such a statement.

It's a genially savage riff on the lazy formula of superhero movies for one thing, introducing each of its alternate universe Spider-Persons with a goofy nod to the fact that Spider-Man's origin story, in particular, has been given all the cinematic attention that it ever could possibly need at this point, but let's do it six more times in 90 minutes, just to be sure.

Overkill and saturation point reached several times over, even the most dedicated Marvel fans must be feeling jaded (Spider-Man: Homecoming was only released last year, Venom only a few months ago) so kudos to The Lego Movie and 22 Jump Street directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller for their latest creation - a Spider-Man movie that does something different, sends up the whole sprawling world of super heroism, and delivers a feel-good message movie all at the same time.
After Sam Raimi’s original mixed-bag trilogy, Andrew Garfield’s all too familiar outing as the webslinger, and last year’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, it would be fair to say we’ve had enough Spider-Man films.
It’s a risk not only to release a Spider-Man film slotted in between Disney’s own behemoths (last year’s Spider-Man: Homecoming and next year’s Spider-Man: Far From Home), but to release one that openly rejects the idea that Holland’s Peter Parker is the definitive Spider-Man, declaring that “anyone can wear the mask”.
Before now, the closest mention to a possible, ‘bigger world’ inclusion was a deleted scene from Spider-Man: Homecoming where Aaron Davis (played in that universe by Donald Glover) mentioned his nephew.
Much in the same way Spider-Man: Homecoming felt authentic to Tom Holland’s portrayal of Peter, punk rock rebellion and all, Into the Spider-Verse reflects all that is Miles in his wondrous complexity.

As you’d likely recall, the concept of the Spider-Man multiverse was utilised to staggeringly impressive results in 2018’s Oscar-winning animated delight Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse .
On that note, it’s easy, but also somewhat unfair, to compare No Way Home to the animated 2018 film, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse , which itself had a level of singular, standalone magic to its vibrant world and memorable characters.
Granted, the idea should be familiar to anyone who saw 2018’s animated “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” which introduced the thrilling possibility that virtually anyone could be Spidey.
Like 2018’s animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse , Spider-Man: No Way Home unites multiple Spideys: Tom Holland’s MCU-approved version, of course, as well as—public press tour denials to the contrary—Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s prior iterations.
What I will say is that, from there "NWH" largely ditches the idea of being a "Far From Home" sequel to, instead, be a film that wants to replicate the success of Sony's 2018 Oscar-winning animated film "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse."
The only real issue is that we've already seen all of that before, namely in 2018's fantastic animated flick, "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse."

It took over two decades for any other major mainstream animated movie to feel quite so revolutionary, but Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse — from powerhouse production duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, working with filmmakers Peter Ramsey, Rodney Rothman and Bob Persichetti — was an eye-sizzling superhero movie so sophisticated, it felt like it had beamed in from another universe altogether.

It’s a brilliant fusion of 3D CGI animation with 2D concepts in a beautiful storybook style reminiscent of films like Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse , Klaus , and The Bad Guys .
The most obvious upgrade from the previous film is in the animation, which takes inspiration from a number of sources but is most obviously reminiscent of the innovations pioneered in Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse .
It was more of a sketchy comic book-like blend of 2D and 3D visual aesthetics that evokes the distinctive look and feel of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018).
It’s a film that’s as kinetic as the recent Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, but with even more nods to classical painting and traditional anime techniques.
This inspired effort continues into the animation, which clearly takes inspiration from the work of 2018's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
Think of it as an expansion of the concept presented in “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.”

When Pixar released Toy Story in 1995, it probably didn’t realize that it was establishing a visual language for computer-animated feature films that would persist for the next two decades, more or less unchallenged.
For starters, it’s animated, a cool blend by directors Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey and Rodney Rothman that’s a bit of the old TV cartoon, a bit of the blurry three-color printed comic and a lot of the creamy rich CGI we’ve come to know since Pixar punted out “Toy Story.”

And while other science fiction institutions, like Star Trek and Doctor Who , mostly shy away from the tricky concept of the alternate reality or parallel universe (except on special occasions), here the unruly notion is deployed with much wit, especially when a crowd of gawkers examine a bit of leftover extra-dimensional strangeness on a NY street, and wonder if it’s a Banksy.

From a flashy opening title treatment that feels like it was inspired by “Enter the Void,” to a color-frenzied climax that looks as if it takes place inside of an old iPod commercial, this clearly isn’t the Spider-Man you’ve seen on screen before.
When the opening credits roll, the various studio logos transform into eye-popping psychedelic glitches — the first time a kid’s movie has ever reminded me of Enter the Void .

Both agreed the stylistic attempts in drawings and the incorporation of split screens and vertical panels were somewhat experimental and the inspiration came from the 2018 Best Animated Feature Film Oscar-winning work, Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse , the 2005 Frank Miller and Quinten Tarantino Sin City , and from the early Expressionist films whereby frames were hand-painted to create coloration.
Ang Lee’s 2003 “Hulk” tried this, with transitions done like story panels, but that pales next to the explosion of super-saturated color and line art deployed here.
Into the Spider-Verse translates the visual language of comics onto the big screen better than any movie since Ang Lee’s Hulk .

There have been six Spider-Man movies since 2002, seven if you include Venom – not to mention Spidey’s various smaller roles in the Marvel films Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War – so it’s safe to say that the web-slinger has been well represented on the cinema screen.
After all, despite the success of 2017’s entertaining “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” starring Tom Holland, and the character’s appearances in “Captain America: Civil War” and “Avengers: Infinity War,” Spidey qualifies as a hit or miss character on the big screen.
The most recent incarnation of Spider-Man made his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Captain America: Civil War before helming his own movie last year.
After appearing in eight live-action blockbuster films since his debut in 2002, including his latest incarnation in Captain America: Civil War , Spider-Man Homecoming , and Avengers: Infinity War , and showcasing the character masterfully in interactive form in this year’s Marvel’s Spider-Man on PlayStation 4 , I could easily see how someone might think there is little else left to do with Spidey that hasn’t already been done yet.
This century alone has seen three Spider-Man movies starring Tobey Maguire (with a planned fourth cancelled); two Amazing Spider-Man movies with Andrew Garfield (with two more cancelled) and Spider-Man: Homecoming featuring Tom Holland, who also pops up in Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War.
And when that reboot ended after just two films, the character was rebooted yet again (first as an extended cameo in "Captain America: Civil War" and then as a standalone offering in 2017's "Spider-Man: Homecoming" featuring Tom Holland).

In the case of "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse," I can see it now as a love letter to the Spider-Man movies rather than a cynical cash-in, as manifested by the thought and care put into the two main characters and the cleverness of the jokes made about the rest (contrast that with some of the cringe-inducing scenes from "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," like where one character walks down a hall and we see a row of references to the technology used by other Spider-Man villains).
