Nobody speaks his famously humane credo — that with great power must come great responsibility — in Jon Watts’s brash Spider-Man: Homecoming, the first Spidey flick as ebullient as the comics you read when you were a kid.
And, ditching the angst and sludgy plotting of the last few films, Homecoming is easily the best Spider-Man film since Sam Raimi’s operatic Spider-Man 2.

Played by a very good Tom Holland, who reminds me of Michael J. Fox from Back to the Future , he’s a bundle of nervous energy who wants to fight crime but also wants a date with high school crush Liz (Laura Harrier), whom he’s too shy to talk to.
It’s a clever reboot, and Holland handles it all in style, reminiscent of the way Michael J. Fox brought humor and wonder to the original Back To The Future.

Conspicuously kid-friendly, the first Spider-Man movie to be produced by Marvel Studios—as a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe—not only doesn't shy from being goofy (see Ant-Man, Guardians of the Galaxy...), but it cheerfully embraces the cartoony.

What potentially could have caught some fans a little off guard was that the Hollywood powerhouse would join forces with Marvel Studios, relinquishing some of their control over the character in order for the Iron Man , Guardians of the Galaxy , Thor and Doctor Strange hit makers to help them craft new adventures for everyone’s friendly neighborhood superhero.
Next to "Guardians of the Galaxy," it may be Marvel's funniest movie.
At times, it’s as if Homecoming, like Guardians of the Galaxy and its sequel, is a push-back against the clouds of darkness that have gathered over recent superhero films.

Spider-Man: Homecoming feels inspired by John Hughes movies, the television show Freaks and Geeks (several people from that production were involved in Spider-Man: Homecoming), and even pull-yourself-up-by-your-bootstraps entrepreneurial spirit movies like Tucker: The Man and His Dream.
(Bryan Singer's X-Men two years earlier did likewise, and both needed 1998's Blade to establish that comic-book movies had to be not comic-booky.)
Eventually, Sony ended up with the property, and, after the success of Brian Singer's 2000 X-Men movie, the studio did three Spider-Man movies with director Sam Raimi starring Tobey Maguire as the webslinger.
