And though an Alien gag is priceless, recapturing a little of the dada sensibility that gives Brooks' early work its immediacy * , it, like references to the "Star Trek" transporter and the money shot of Planet of the Apes , presumes to lump Star Wars in with hard(er) sci-fi, which seems a rather philistine thing to do.
As a "Star Trek" fan, I can't help but to wonder if Gene Roddenberry and Patrick O'Brian had shared notepads.
As Abrams’ and Lindelof’s TV series LOST (2004 – 2010) was just coming to an end with a surprising alternate universe timeline, the duo dusted off the frequently attempted “Starfleet Academy” prequel film concept (which dates back to creator Gene Roddenberry’s announcement way back in 1968 ).
“Lost” composer Michael Giacchino’s score sadly lacks the epic-quality of the Vangelis-esque music used in the film’s promotional trailers, but it is otherwise a very impressive if overly repetitive music that fits in with both the film’s tone and the franchise as a whole.

Meanwhile, Abrams was busily preparing next December’s highly anticipated reboot of the Star Trek franchise.
There are clues strewn throughout Cloverfield (the movie is custom-built for repeated viewings -- more money in the Paramount cashbox!), and the ambiguity should come as no surprise, however, since the film is produced by the master-of-the-non-reveal, J.J. Abrams (Lost, Alias, the upcoming Star Trek reboot), and written by Drew Goddard and directed by Matt Reeves, two guys who have worked for years in the Abrams camp and cling to his theory that plausible explanations are for wimps.
The design of the creatures is cool and a little reminiscent of the "Cloverfield" monster.
J.J. Abrams, the multi-hyphenate talent behind TV's "Lost" and 2008's " Cloverfield ," takes to the director's seat for the first time since 2006's " Mission: Impossible III " with "Star Trek," one of his most noteworthy career achievements.

So Abrams did well to eschew celebrity casting and scour the galaxy to find Chris Pine, a relatively unknown young actor (he appeared in the 2006 crime drama Smokin’ Aces and last year's Bottle Shock ) who understands and channels Shatner's loopy appeal without ever impersonating him.
Some CGI space battle scenes look like something taken right out of Revenge of the Sith (if it wasn’t for the familiar Trek hardware that is).
Similar to what happened with the similar-themed "Star Trek" some thirty years before, Firefly garnered a huge following in such a short amount of time, and with sales of itâs DVD Box-Set going through the roof â it seemed only natural to give it a second chance - on a bigger canvas.
Having never watched Firefly – Joss Whedon’s short-lived Old West-meets-Star Trek TV series – I’m in no position to make comparisons between it and Whedon’s cinematic spin-off Serenity.
There are flying warships, odd animals and electrical special effects, but in essence the bulk of the film is more like "Lawrence of Arabia" than "Star Trek" . . .

But Chris Pine (“The Princess Diaries”) is more than up for the challenge.
In the novels, J.K. Rowling's world has been described to such a degree as to create a following on par with that of "Star Trek" and "Lord of the Rings".
