(The only other role of substance goes to none other than Mariela Pera, unforgettable as the prostitute in "Pixote."
It's like a somewhat more palatable, less brilliant version of Victor Babenenco's Pixote (which is also set in Brazil & deals with the country's abandoned youth).
But the whole story is known by her friend Irene ( Marilia Pera , who played the prostitute who adopts the street kid in " Pixote ").
"Central Station" isn't particularly edgy - not like the graphic, landmark portrait of Brazilian street youths, "Pixote" (as perhaps an homage to that 1981 masterpiece, Salles casts Marilia Pe^ra, the prostitute in that film, in the small role as Dora's roommate).

When compared to an absolutely heart-wrenching work like Hector Babenco�s similar Pixote, City of God is quite obviously a minor work of a director that could possibly make major ones one day.
"City of God" takes you to a place that has only been explored in such harsh films as Hector Babenco's "Pixote" and the cult flick "The Harder They Come."
Hearkening back to another groundbreaking work of Brazilian social realism, 1981's Pixote, Meirelles cast real-life street kids for his movie and then developed their characters and naturalistic "nonperformances" in a series of extensive, improvisational workshops.
I was prepared to see something akin to Hector Babenco's "Pixote" or Luis Bunuel's "Los Olvidados", but was disappointed to discover that the film had more in common with Quentin Tarentino.
In a society of children and adolescents who have no homes and no money, crime is the natural way of survival, but they're not very good at it (the gangs in " City of God ," made 20 years later, are much more sophisticated).
Long before Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund made "City of God" in 2002, about Rio de Janeiro's youth-centric atmosphere of organized crime, director Hector Babenco set the bar for such explosive cinema with his brilliant 1981 film "Pixote."

Hector Babenco's Pixote has as its antecedents such works as Jean Vigo's Zéro de Conduite (1933), Vittorio De Sica's Shoeshine (1946), Luis Buñuel's Los Olvidados (1950), and François Truffaut's The 400 Blows (1959); the gun-toting youth of Barbet Schroeder's Our Lady of the Assassins (2000) would certainly have been influenced by Pixote.

Finally, Kovak develops a pseudo-romantic relationship with a lovely, undercover journalist (Alice Braga, niece of Brazilian actress Sonia Braga of Kiss of the Spider Woman fame) out to expose "the truth" about exorcisms.
From one pit stop to the next, their savior tot facilitates a string of serendipitous, sometimes confusing reconnects: Gin reunites with the daughter he believes to have shamed; Hana (a dead ringer for Pixote‘s Marília Pêra) seeks guidance from his drag queen “Mother”; and Miyuki deals with her relationship to her dead cat.
But Kids isn't shocking -- not nearly as much as Hector Babenco's Pixote, or Luis Buñuel's Los Olvidados (which is 45 years old!).
The magical escapism tends to rob any real sense of grittiness, which lends to its mystique, at least in comparison to other prison dramas focused on actual institutions, such as Hector Babenco’s Carandiru (2003), for instance.

That carnival atmosphere comes off as a fragrant bouquet of patronizing pap that revels in its sordidness yet feels curiously naïve--"Oz" by a creative team that doesn't appear to know that the bar on prison dramas has been raised since Brute Force.
The film is so brutal it sometimes makes HBO's "Oz" seem like "Jailhouse Rock."
When ancient Greece was the cradle of democracy, it was threatened by the Persian God-King Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro, "Carandiru," Paulo on TV's "Lost") who sent a Messenger (Peter Mensah, "Tears of the Sun," "Hidalgo") to Spartan King Leonidas (Gerard Butler, "Dear Frankie," "The Phantom of the Opera") promising him power and reaches if he would just kneel before him.

The bar, though, for a prison epic was set astronomically high with “Carandiru,’’ Hector Babenco’s strange, tragic 2003 Brazilian prison spectacle.
Essentially, this is a Short Cuts-style multistrand drama featuring a series of interlocking stories and strongly engaging characters.
