Colin Farrell delivers a solid performance as Stuart Shepard, a sleazy publicist straight out of the classic noir Sweet Smell of Success.
How it compares to the Broadway show I cannot say — Creative Loafing's budget inexplicably does not provide for me to stay a few days in New York to check it out firsthand — but the screen version is a tasty, wicked treat; to borrow a classic phrase from Sweet Smell of Success, it's a cookie full of arsenic.
Between Chazelle's direction and tight script (expanded from his original, award-winning short film), the terrific lead performances as well as Paul Reiser's brief but impactful appearance as Andrew's concerned father, Sharone Meir's golden-hued cinematography and Justin Hurwitz's superb jazz score (arguably the best of its kind since Elmer Bernstein's for 1957's Sweet Smell of Success) there are few false notes/moves.
The setup for Ready or No t is similar to Alexander Mackendrick's The Ladykillers , where a ruthless crew of veteran criminals (led by Alec Guinness) finds themselves unable to neutralize a seemingly frail old woman (Katie Johnson).

From this setup alone, “Birdman” has all the trappings of a deliciously tawdry backstage satire on a par with “All About Eve” and “Sweet Smell of Success,” but writer-director Alejandro González Iñárritu throws in a delightfully wacky monkey wrench in the form of a pretentious actor named Mike Shiner (Edward Norton), who’s cast in the play at the last minute when a member of the ensemble is injured (with or without the help of Thomson’s Birdman-esque psychic gifts).
They act as if finding fool’s gold behind the glitter of Hollywood/Broadway is some kind of revelation, as if Birdman’s many predecessors — including Sunset Boulevard and TheSweet Smell of Success — never happened.
There's a fair whiff of "Whisky Galore" to these often amusing characters, but for the most part, their keenness to get wealthy strikes a realistic chord that provides a solid foundation for the humour.
(“Shop: Let’s talk it,” Spacey’s character says, sounding like an extra from “Sweet Smell of Success”).
"Frances Ha" is filmed in a high-contrast black and white, evoking the glossy nostalgia of Woody Allen 's "Manhattan" but also the film noir New York of "Sweet Smell of Success."
