DC's Legends of Tomorrow (2016)
When heroes alone are not enough ... the world needs legends. What critics say influenced DC's Legends of Tomorrow
…then Kuasa should at least be slowly disappearing, like in Back to the Future?
…the fact that the resulting plot is basically a clever spin on Back to the Future is just the icing on the cake…
…but as with the Back to the Future / Doc Brown gag a few weeks back, it makes no sense…
Jax is struggling with the death of Stein and the fortuitous appearance of Young Stein inspires him to attempt a Back to the Future-style intervention…
The whole sequence, apart from gleefully riffing on Back to the Future with Martin’s disappearing wedding ring, also offers up some extremely enjoyable character interaction…
Jax-from-the-Jump-Ship pops up and asks Stein to help him get – wait for it – back to the future!
…or Back to the Future III…
…reminds you of the Wild West episode of Kirk-era Star Trek…
If you’ve ever watched the original series of Star Trek, then you’ll know that the episodes where Kirk fights Evil Kirk (or Spock fights Evil Spock) are almost always the best episodes.
Stein gets in a fun Star Trek / Doctor McCoy reference – “Dammit, Jefferson, I’m a physicist, not a doctor!”
…like some red shirt on Star Trek…
…with Star Trek-obsessed Ray taking over as Captain in Rip’s absence (“Make sure Picard here doesn’t get us all killed.” “Actually, I’m more like Sulu right now.”)
…radiating the same sort of giddy joy at being a superhero show that you get on The Flash every week (or used to, back in Season 1, before things got all dark and Zoomy)…
This is something that both The Flash and Arrow have also suggested in the past…
…right up there with the Season 1 Flash finale…
It was a better choice than the Flash or Supergirl…
…the crossover events and the crossover characters between all the DC shows on the CW network, including, Arrow, The Flash, and Supergirl.
He appeared in an episode of The Flash and he pops up again this episode… on Gary’s Beebo socks.
…we’re off and running for a very entertaining riff on E.T.
After the standalone fun and frolics of the show’s E.T. homage…
…we then get a nicely tense sequence that owes a nod to Jurassic Park, because they figure out that Black Flash can only sense Eobard when he’s running, so he has to stay stock still while Black Flash prowls around.
Ray, Nate and Amaya are sent out into what amounts to a budget version of Jurassic Park to get it back.
…without Raiders of the Lost Ark, Nate didn’t decide to become, as the show puts it, “an improbably handsome archaeologist”…

…in the form of some Arrow-style flashbacks…
…especially compared with the big bads (that’s TV recapper talk for a recurring season-long bad guy) on sister shows Arrow and The Flash…
…the so-called Arrowverse…
…cleverly matching up with a scene from the season finale of Arrow…
Take note, please, Arrow: this is how you do a season finale.
Fans of sister show Arrow will already be intimately familiar with Star City, and this episode very much assumes a working knowledge of that show.
…the blue swirly place functions a lot like the waiting room in Quantum Leap…
…with Bill Gates’ dad as one of his students in a nice moment that recalls Quantum Leap’s “kiss with history” cameos…
…the show does another one of those awkward, Quantum Leap-inspired kiss-with-history moments…
…it’s a lot of fun watching Jax go all Die Hard, as he takes down Rip’s British henchmen…
He then indulges in some Die Hard-style creeping around the ship, taking out bad guys and kicking ass…
The episode begins with an unseen creature attacking American soldiers in the Vietnamese jungle, Predator-style.
…next up is a Groundhog Day-style time-loop episode…
…it’s perhaps a little surprising that it’s taken them this long to get around to doing a Groundhog Day trapped-in-a-time-loop episode…
After her semi-solo Groundhog Day adventure, Zari was more or less sidelined this episode…

…reminds you of the Wild West episode of Kirk-era Star Trek (or Red Dwarf, come to that)…
…as Future Rimmer used to say on Red Dwarf…
…he goes a fetching shade of purple, just like Joffrey in Game of Thrones…
(They should have cast Joffrey from Game of Thrones.)
