What critics say influenced Avengers: Infinity War
This is not a spoiler: “ Avengers: Infinity War ” contains the most dramatic cliffhanger of any major blockbuster since “The Empire Strikes Back,” and everything leading up to it is a marathon.
The ending of The Empire Strikes Back is frequently cited in this regard, but I could just as easily include several story beats in everything from Mad Max: Fury Road to The Last Jedi to Marvel’s own Black Panther as creating fantastical situations that nevertheless were grounded in real human feeling.
There are many reasons why “Infinity War” evokes “The Empire Strikes Back” – the cutting across multiple storylines, the darker tones of its story – and one of the main reasons is because it’s so accomplished and does what it sets out to do so well.
Infinity War is Marvel’s answer to Empire Strikes Back with our heroes facing off against overwhelming odds and the increasing sense that all hope is lost.

Don’t take this as a plea for an even longer movie, but honestly, if it’s anything like this one, to paraphrase Chief Brody in “Jaws,” they’re gonna need a bigger boat.

This is the It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World of Marvel movies, with Thanos subbing for Spencer Tracy.
The character and his movie – and it’s very much Thanos’ movie – lay waste to last year’s culmination of the DC Extended Universe, “ Justice League ,” and its similarly computer-generated baddie.
After all, the big DC team-up movie Justice League was not good, and the new Avengers shows it up in every respect: it’s a truly epic adventure, spectacular and wildly entertaining, with impressive CG characters, and a cast stocked with not six beloved superheroes but twenty.
I shouldn’t be surprised that “Avengers: Infinity War” is all that and more, but I am, especially after last year’s dismal “Justice League.”
Thor interacting with Rocket (voice of Bradley Cooper), who refers to the sentient raccoon as a squirrel, or Tony Stark/Iron Man trading insults with Dr. Strange, is one of the reasons the Marvel movies aren’t dark, leaden lumps like “Justice League” (and that’s painful to admit for this DC Comics fan).
Compare this to DC’s recent Justice League (2017) feature, which awkwardly introduced characters most of us couldn’t give a lick about meeting.
It’s all there, save for banter between Spider-Man and Star-Lord about Kevin Bacon’s dancing in Footloose.
