The flavour of an intergalactic western, echoing both Star Wars and The Mandalorian and Grogu, is always there, complete with bizarre aliens and cumbersome, rusting but somehow still functioning spacecraft.

With SUPERGIRL, written by Ana Noguera and directed by Craig Gillespie, it’s not only a down-in-the-mouth slog, but it’s so derivative of STAR WARS, MAD MAX, and yes, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, it makes me wonder if Gunn genuinely has the vision the WB executives thought he had.
That’s right, folks, Supergirl just introduced its own Mos Eisley Cantina – and, as well a chance for the show to have fun with its creature effects, it gives Alex and Maggie a chance to show off their sparky chemistry…
It’s as if someone meshed together the aesthetics of Mad Max: Fury Road and Guardians of the Galaxy…
And when it comes, it’s impossible to avoid comparisons with Guardians Of The Galaxy. This is the closest DC has ever come to the irreverence of Marvel’s much-loved franchise, and it’s fuelled by a rip-roaringly swaggering turn from Jason Momoa as bounty hunter, Lobo.
What could have been a “Guardians of the Galaxy” style space romp is, instead, more of a mixed bag.
A common criticism thrown towards this movie is that it is visually similar to James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy.
It has a visual world similar to Guardians of the Galaxy, equally boring and stale humor, heavy use of popular music, and desperate moments where it tries to win our hearts with Krypto’s overly cute behaviors.
A touch of Guardians of the Galaxy there.

“Supergirl” has an obvious affection for not only DC Comics, but also “Star Wars,” “John Wick” and a handful of post-apocalyptic flicks but allows those influences to get in the way of establishing a style and personality of its own.
The poisoning of Krypto reminded me of John Wick (2014), though Kara isn’t as bloodthirsty as John.

With Krem being the only one who possesses the antidote, the film morphs into something resembling a stripped-down, sci-fi “John Wick.”
