What critics compared The Housemaid to
Kim Ki-young’s The Housemaid (South Korea, 1960) is a classic of South Korean cinema but until Criterion released the film on disc in 2013 it was largely unknown (or at least unseen) to even the most dedicated cinephile apart from its inspiration for Im Sang-soo’s 2010 remake.
Back in 2008 and with the backing of Martin Scorsese, Cannes welcomed a special presentation of a digitally restored print of Kim Ki-young's original 1960 movie The Housemaid .
I have never seen the 1960 original film that Korean director Im Sang-soo’s The Housemaid is based upon.
Case in point: “The Housemaid,” director Im Sang-soo’s loose rejiggering of a 1960 erotic thriller of the same name by Kim Ki-young.
More compelling, though a letdown in its own way, was Im Sang-soo's The Housemaid , a remake of a classic South Korean thriller from 1960.
On a mountainside in South Korea, Mija (An Seo Hyun, 2010's "The Housemaid"), who lives with her grandfather Heebong (Byun Heebong, "The Host"), has grown up with one of them, unaware that her grandfather has been paid for her best friend "Okja."
A huge fan of director Ki-young Kim and his 1960 film The Housemaid, Bong also stresses the importance of stairs in this film.
