What critics compared Son of Rambow to
The mix of music and kitchen sink drama, plus Irishness, might make The Commitments the obvious comparator, but think more in the vein of Son Of Rambow, with music instead of movies.
There’s a touch of Michel Gondry’s Be Kind Rewind or Garth Jennings’s Son of Rambow in the band’s attempts to reproduce the high-gloss sheen of Russell Mulcahy’s pop videos in a Dublin backstreet, armed only with a silk scarf, a cowboy outfit and an abundance of eyeliner.
At first glance the scenario is similar to Garth Jennings’s Son of Rambow , about two boys in the 1980s remaking First Blood.
On one hand, Abrams had crafted an endearing "Son of Rambow"-style period piece, bottling that childhood thrill of cinematic discovery like so many summer lightning bugs, while at the same time, he feels compelled to turn it into something bigger.
For a certain personality type, filmmaking is a contagious compulsion, and it’s entertaining to see how the bug bit Spielberg — although a dose of irreverence might’ve been more effective, leaning into how endearingly clumsy those efforts were (à la “Son of Rambow”).
Given the number of movies from Super 8 to Son of Rambow, that focus on the joy of kids and their friends with a camera, it sure is fun to see Spielberg go ahead and make one of these.
When his soldier father (David Thewlis, "Naked," "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix") receives a promotion, young Bruno (Asa Butterfield, "Son of Rambow") is unhappy about leaving his friends and splendid home in Berlin.
Asa Butterfield (2008's " Son of Rambow ") is an extraordinary find as Bruno, so instinctive and vulnerable in his performance that he never once can be caught acting.

With something for the big kid in all of us, Hunt for the Wilderpeople pours a dose of the mystery and wonderment of Beasts of the Southern Wild, the sense of loss and troubled childhoods of Son of Rambow and the reckless, carefree abandonment of outlaws on the run in Thelma & Louise.
His sons, Eddie (voice of Tom Holland, "The Impossible") and Sean (voice of Bill Milner, "Son of Rambow"), are dismayed that he's missing a highly anticipated football match the family had made plans around.
Will Poulter (“We’re the Millers,” “Son of Rambow”) is also very good as a young Jim Bridger, who would go on to form his own mountain-man legend in the coming decades but who here is no match for the feral Fitzgerald.
The British actor Will Poulter (“Son of Rambow,””We’re the Millers”), playing another member of the fur trapping party, is the very embodiment of greenhorn — slow to lose the values, and the baby fat — of the civilization he left behind.
