From the vague mythic references to the bizarre crustacean tribesmen to the bonkers backstory, this is a movie built to be beloved by people who are thrilled whenever Excaliber or Clash of the Titans pops up on the channel guide.
His epic battles with gnarly undersea monsters gives the film a Clash of the Titans vibe.
But the looks can’t match the story, a hodgepodge screenplay by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick (“Wrath of the Titans”) and Will Beall (“Gangster Squad”), with story credit going to Geoff Johns, Wan and Beall.
Playing like a modern-day parody of ’80s fantasy films like Clash of the Titans , Aquaman embraces the camp, the zany, and the weird, to create a movie that’s one part fish soap opera and another globetrotting adventure you’ll be unable to take your eyes off of.
Imagine if someone cut together all the biggest action sequences from the last few decades of Hollywood, resulting in a mash of Tron , Avatar , Clash Of The Titans , Superman , Jurassic Park , and Gladiator .
It’s not as cornball and goofy as Clash of the Titans (either the 1981 or 2010 versions), but it nudges close to that territory.
