That line earned chuckles at the screening I attended, coming across like a backhanded jab at the Barrera and Ortega-led installment, which just happened to be the franchise’s biggest box office hit, and also its best sequel since Scream 2.
This year’s Scream (not to be confused with 1996’s Scream , of course) contains a moment with a Matryoshka doll of references: a low-angle shot of a showerhead echoes the scene from movie-within-a-movie Stab in 1997’s Scream 2 , which was obviously itself nodding to 1960’s Psycho .
Scream and Scream 2 , its superior sequel, are anarchic romps through the slasher subgenre and are, of course, incredibly entertaining.
Scream 2 and Scream 4 were pretty damn great.
As Scream 2 skewers sequels and Scream 4 ravages reboots, 2022’s Scream sets its crosshairs on another franchise milestone using savage horror commentary that once again disrupts prevalent genre patterns.
Scream 2 followed in 1997 and, while solid, it lacked the razor-sharp precision of its predecessor.
The film will no doubt earn some comparisons to Scream, but while it shares some DNA with Wes Craven’s iconic horror franchise, especially the collegiate Scream 2, Happy Death Day isn’t so much meta-horror as it is self-aware.
For example, Scream 2 killed one of its most iconic characters in broad daylight while strategically making the audience wonder where the carnage was going to come from moment to moment.

Coming across like a MAD Magazine movie satire, except much, much filthier, "Scary Movie" is almost a scene-for-scene parody of "Scream," with the exception of an over-long sequence spoofing "I Know What You Did Last Summer" and another part that resembles the opening moments of "Scream 2."
By and large, what we get is an almost shot-for-shot remake of "Scream" mixed with "I Know What You Did Last Summer", "Scream 2" as well as potshots at "The Blair Witch Project", "The Sixth Sense" and "The Matrix".
It's a spoof of many recent popular horror movies, smushing together highlights from Scream, Scream 2 (1997), I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997), The Sixth Sense (1999), The Blair Witch Project (1999), and other recent hits and centers around a masked killer on the loose chasing teens.
"Scream 2" featured both a parody of "Scream" (in the form of "Stab," the movie-within-a-movie based on the events of the first film) and a clever tweaking of horror sequels.
The following year's "Scream 2" was arguably even better, with 2000's third part weaker but still enjoyable.
While “Scream 2” was the best of the original trilogy, “Scream 3” was the weakest.
The next four years produced two sequels, both helmed by Craven, although only Scream 2 (1997) was written by Williamson (Ehren Kruger did writing duties on 2000’s Scream 3, working from Williamson’s outline).
However, there’s no doubt that Scream 2 and (especially) Scream 3 failed to live up to the bar set by the original.
The Stab series of hit horror films based on Gale’s oeuvre have spun off interminably since commencing in Scream 2 and 3, leaving Sidney in an existential lurch and Gale herself in a career funk.
