What critics compared Eyes of Laura Mars to
It’s unclear if Last Night in Soho is supposed to be a campy homage to past horror—with its Eyes of Laura Mars visions and Suspiria swirls—or if it’s meant as sobering social critique.
On the plus side, the music, by Radiohead’s Thom Yorke, is suitably chilly and sonorous, and the costumes are rather grand: Giulia Piersanti gets the late-1970s Eyes of Laura Mars thing down perfectly, putting the cast in lots of tall boots, belted coats and billowy tunic dresses, with the occasional swirling cape.
Motel rooms are stalked by beasts both real and metaphorical (Keanu Reeves giving good creep) and photographers are indistinguishable from serial killers (shades of Eyes of Laura Mars ).
Fans of the grittier side of New York City (of which Aronofsky made great use in his feature debut, Pi ) will love the on-the-ground feel of the film, which might spark memories of Dressed to Kill , Rosemary’s Baby , and Eyes of Laura Mars .
