The Phantom Tollbooth, based upon the children's adventure novel by Norton Juster, tells the story of a bored young boy named Milo. Unexpectedly receiving a magic tollbooth and, having nothing better to do, Milo drives through it and enters a kingdom in turmoil following the loss of its princesses, Rhyme and Reason.

For those who've done their time in the valley of children's literature, "Up" glances off any number of classic tales: Carl's hemmed-in cottage evokes "The Little House" of Virginia Lee Burton, for instance, and Dug the dog carries echoes of the beloved Tock of "The Phantom Tollbooth."
“Kubo and the Two Strings” carries echoes of L. Frank Baum as well -- and Roald Dahl, and “The Phantom Tollbooth,” and even some of bluegrass legends Flatt and Scruggs in the hero’s Foggy Mountain samisen breakdowns.
I can't help but feel like "Inside Out" is an emotional response to the more logic-driven (and wittier) journey via "The Phantom Tollbooth."
If the children's literature section of your neighborhood bookstore was shuffled up and animated, with painterly sophistication and a Grimm eye for the bizarre, The Phantom Tollbooth and The Wizard of Oz landing on top, the result might look like Spirited Away.
