The rape-and-revenge movie is the ugly bastard stepchild in the family tree of horror—at best, it can be an artful indictment of all humanity (Gaspar Noé's Irreversible); at worst, the misogynist indulgence of a demented director's nasty fantasies (David DeFalco's Chaos).

The first two names that jumped out at me when looking into the specifics of the new film starring Russell Crowe were writer Carl Ellsworth (the remakes of Red Dawn and The Last House on the Left, as well as films like Disturbia and Red Eye, which are interesting genre works that feel like remakes of better movies) and director Derrick Borte (who made another movie about a downtrodden, middle-aged white guy last year, called American Dreamer, starring Jim Gaffigan).
But the script from writer Carl Ellsworth (“Disturbia,” “The Last House on the Left”) seeks to exploit the malaise blanketing the nation for cheap and gory B-movie jolts.
But the film, directed by German Derrick Borte (“American Dreamer”) and written by Carl Ellsworth (“Disturbia,” “The Last House on the Left”), invites us to get a kick out of murderous, clown-shaped, Energizer Bunny Tom.
Ellsworth, a writer who has action and horror credentials, crafted a suspenseful script that echoes his previous thrillers Red Eye and Disturbia as well as the horror flick The Last House on the Left .

This kind of movie has been made before, aside from Zarchi's original, and it could be argued more effectively: Ingmar Bergman's The Virgin Spring (1960), and its unofficial American remake Wes Craven's The Last House on the Left (1972), as well as the inferior remake of that film, from 2009.
