Plot
Despite being a box office hit, it’s not as warmly remembered today as Sleepless in Seattle, which always surprised me – probably because I never cared for Sleepless (or its inspiration, the sappy, unbearable An Affair to Remember), while Mail still charms effortlessly.
In Sleepless, the movie that embodied a woman's fantasies was An Affair to Remember; for men, it was The Dirty Dozen.
That earlier film was partly inspired by "An Affair to Remember," and this one is inspired by "The Shop Around the Corner," but both are really inspired by the appeal of Ryan and Hanks, who have more winning smiles than most people have expressions.
The dialogue is witty and there are a few truly hilarious scenes such as Rita Wilson (Hanks' real-life wife) trying in vein to explain why women love "An Affair to Remember" to two men.
A leitmotif is the old Cary Grant-Deborah Kerr weepie "An Affair to Remember", and its key scene on the Empire State Building is echoed with a nice twist in"Sleepless in Seattle".
Evoked by "Sleepless in Seattle," through clips and numerous references in dialogue and soundtrack music, is Leo McCarey's sentimental 1957 classic "An Affair to Remember," a movie that instantly reduces every woman in the new film to tears.
The best thing about You've Got Mail, Nora Ephron's remake of Ernst Lubitsch's delightful The Shop Around the Corner , is that its modernity is mostly for show.

Mildly reminiscent of "Sleepless in Seattle" as it involves various bi-coastal "near misses" - where the two would-be lovers just miss running into each other (one could call this something like "Mobile in Manhattan") - the film is a charming and fluffy little exercise in romance and comedy that thankfully at least partially breaks the mold of the stereotypical romantic comedy.
Yes, Serendipity is one of those "soul mate" movies like Sleepless in Seattle and An Affair to Remember.
The will-they-ever-meet concept behind "Serendipity" may not be all that original, but this picture isn't a "Sleepless In Seattle"-style sickeningly saccharine confection.
Basically, it’s Sleepless In Seattle all over again, with the film striving desperately to keep its two leads apart until the end, so you get lots of those ‘she arrives in a taxi just as he leaves’-type scenes.

In movies, the epistolary story has taken many forms from an exchange of finely wrought letters in “84 Charing Cross Road” to the online correspondence between Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks in “You’ve Got Mail,” where neither realizes the other is a despised business rival.
Where a Hollywood revamp like You’ve Got Mail facilely updated director Ernst Lubitsch’s 1940 classic by substituting e-mail for mash notes, The Lunchbox makes a point of keeping the communiqués analog – an old-fashioned gesture in a local culture still caught between high-tech modernity and tactile traditionalism.
A clever setup that harkens back to “You’ve Got Mail” and “The Shop Around the Corner” doesn’t quite pay off in India’s warm-hearted comedy-drama “The Lunchbox.”
It is the Indian equivalent of Eat Drink Man Woman with a little You’ve Got Mail thrown in for good measure.
As a matter fact, were it not for the setting, the language and the mouth-watering shots of local cuisine, you might very well mistake it for Nora Ephron's You've Got Mail.

Thus, like Sleepless in Seattle (1993), a film with which it otherwise has nothing in common, Going the Distance is a romance in which the principals spend much of their screen time apart, which gives first-time screenwriter Geoff LaTulippe plenty of room to fill with eclectic supporting characters.
So it's shaping up as a long haul, with certain echoes of Ephron's classic exercise in delayed gratification, Sleepless in Seattle, without being nearly as extreme.

"While You Were Sleeping" is a sentimental successor to "Sleepless In Seattle," and so much like the popular Nora Ephron picture that a more suitable title would have been "Comatose in Chicago."
Pullman, who in film after film (from “Sleepless in Seattle” to “Sommersby”) has played the guy who loses the girl, finally emerges as a full-fledged leading man here.
When -- and for that matter, why -- did Sleepless in Seattle become the sine qua non for any critical blurb for a romantic comedy?
While You Were Sleeping movie likely to appeal to the Sleepless in Seattle crowd, is a perfect example of this unoriginal-but-enjoyable type of film making.
If Sleepless in Seattle was designer romance, While You Were Sleeping is comfortable fit: loose-knit sweaters, lumberjack shirts, blue jeans and Timberland boots.
And these days they are inevitably compared to "Sleepless in Seattle," "When Harry Met Sally . . .
But the film is directed like a zany slapstick remake of Pretty In Pink (mixed with You've Got Mail), and all the goofy antics undermine any potential for actual comedy or romance.

It's a wonderful romantic comedy that borrows the basic formula of Sleepless in Seattle (1993) -- two lovers fated for each other but tantalizingly kept apart -- and brings it to life.
Cheerful, accomplished and straightforwardly commercial, "Next Stop Wonderland" is basically the second best version of "Sleepless in Seattle" ever made--and that's not a criticism.

The movie also is hindered by Ryan's performance, which is almost a caricature of the persona that worked in When Harry Met Sally ... and Sleepless in Seattle.
Much like the Empire State Building was a cornerstone of Sleepless in Seattle, New York City's Brooklyn Bridge lays the foundation in Kate & Leopold, as the film commences with a sepia-tinted August 28, 1876 ceremony commemorating that structure's erection, a word that elicits a nervous sexual giggle from Stuart Besser (Liev Schreiber), a time traveler from 125 years hence.
Ryan, of course, has made a great career ("Sleepless in Seattle," "You've Got Mail") playing women who have a lot of trouble finding the right man, despite the fact that she is very attractive and charming.
She is starting to show her age and, here, is not the fresh faced young thing that graced the screen in "When Harry Met Sally" or "Sleepless in Seattle."
Meg Ryan does this sort of thing about as well as it can possibly be done, and after " Sleepless in Seattle " and " You've Got Mail ," here is another ingenious plot that teases us with the possibility that true love will fail, while winking that, of course, it will prevail.
On second thoughts, "together" doesn't quite explain the state in which they find themselves in The Lake House, which is a Sleepless in Seattle-type love story - an example of the delayed gratification model, where circumstances conspire to ensure that the lovers spend much of the picture apart.
Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan had it in Sleepless in Seattle.
Combine equal parts "Memento" and "Sleepless in Seattle" and you might concoct something like "The Lake House," an Americanization of the fascinating 2000 Korean romantic fantasy "Il Mare," in which two solitary souls make a connection via enchanted letters.
Like "Sleepless in Seattle" and, to a similar extent, "Heat", the audience for "House" has come to the theater looking to see two stars play together on screen.
