Ex-football star Mike Gambril meets Terry McKay on a flight to Sydney, which is forced to land on a small atoll. They become romantic on board a ship sent to take them to a larger island. They agree to meet in New York three months later to see if the attraction is real. One shows up but the other doesn't. However, a chance meeting brings them together again.

What critics compared Love Affair to
Promising to meet at the top of the Empire State Building in three months (yes, just like "Sleepless in Seattle," which paid homage to the Grant-Kerr movie), they anticipate the love of their lives.
A remake of both 1939’s Love Affair and its remake, the 1957 romantic gusher An Affair to Remember (the film that inspired Sleepless in Seattle‘s moony-eyed fetishization of the Empire State Building), the new, high-glitz Love Affair is an eerie contradiction, a cornball potboiler sprinkled with media-age razzle-dazzle.
Familiar, that is, to anyone who has seen the first "Love Affair," "An Affair to Remember" or "Sleepless in Seattle."
Oblivion must be the only science-fiction film that borrows substantially from I Am Legend, WALL-E and Sleepless in Seattle — itself a remake of 1957’s An Affair to Remember, which was a remake of 1939’s Love Affair.
Director Glenn Gordon Caron, for whom Hall shot Love Affair, identifies a melancholy in Hall that translated to his images, which was a real eureka moment for me in terms of pinpointing what Mendes's films have lacked in Hall's absence.
Then, more decorously, there were the non-adulterous, pathos-ridden romantic complications of Leo McCarey’s Love Affair (1939), with Irene Dunne and Charles Boyer, and his own 1957 remake of the film with Deborah Kerr and Cary Grant, retitled An Affair to Remember.
