The choreography of Dastan's jumping-jack athleticism borrows from the bouncy French tradition known as parkour (introduced to movie audiences in 2004's "District 13"), but the chaotic editing and frequent closeups sabotage the admirable work of the stunt men and disrupt the sense of genuine athleticism conveyed by (for example) daring Douglas Fairbanks in the silent "The Thief of Bagdad," an Arabian Nights genre predecessor.

Tarantino's new World War II movie, "Inglourious Basterds," brings with it the usual avalanche of insider film-geek references: A character named Aldo Raine is a reference to the late Aldo Ray, star of the 1955 war movie "Battle Cry"; the name of another character — Hugo Stiglitz — refers to a Mexican horror-film star.

Mr. Scorsese once called Walsh’s 1939 post-World-War-I crime film, “ The Roaring Twenties ,” a “twisted Horatio Alger story,” a thumbnail description that also fits “American Hustle.”
But, true to the tradition of crime movies going back to James Cagney in "White Heat," "A Prophet" - which was nominated for an Oscar for best foreign-language film this year and won the grand jury prize at last year's Cannes Film Festival - is taut and brutal, and its scenes of bloodletting often stand out.
This story of a fifteen year-old who enters a life of crime resembles classics like Hawks' Scarface , Walsh's White Heat , and any of a handful of other James Cagney or Edward G. Robinson gangster films.
The tough-guy couplings go back to Gable and Tracy in "San Francisco," and Edmund Lowe and Victor McLaglen in the silent "What Price Glory."

Channeling James Cagney in White Heat and Paul Muni in Scarface, Nicholson leeches out the glamour to create a landmark portrait of evil.

Only a queasy late-night kitchen scene with the twin’s indulgent mother (Jane Wood) feels freshly observed — but, come to think of it, “Goodfellas” and “White Heat” got there first, too.
With an eye on the international market, Helgeland (who co-wrote the screenplay for LA Confidential ) tips his hat to Scarface , White Heat and Sunset Boulevard , investing his British anti-heroes with a stateside pizzazz entirely befitting their Rat Pack aspirations.
If you're not already having fun, try not to now, with Cage playing Travolta in a futuristic take-off on White Heat.

Humphrey Bogart, forever associated with tough-hero roles in films like Casablanca and The Big Sleep , gave some of his best performances in darker roles (e.g., The Caine Mutiny, High Sierra).
