What critics compared High Sierra to
The last scenes are especially satisfying, both in movie terms — with the cliff-side echoes of Bogart in “High Sierra” (1941) and Kirk Douglas in “Lonely Are the Brave” (1962) — and in the final moral calculus of banker, lawman, farmer, thief.
With an homage to Bogie and an ending ripped from the final seconds of Raoul Walsh’s High Sierra , Godard simultaneously salutes Hollywood and gives it the finger: Says longtime cinematographer Raoul Coutard in a new doc, the director made a purposely rebellious movie, using a handheld camera, natural light, a wheelchair for dolly shots, and, most famously, the influential and now-ubiquitous jump cuts.
Greengrass delivers plenty of tracking shots of hooves galloping like “Stagecoach” (1939), but his best action sequence comes on foot with a thrilling mountain shootout like “High Sierra” (1941), surviving with ammo ingenuity.
It's an amusing performance (easier to take than Hepburn's, at any rate), although it doesn't compare to his work in High Sierra, Casablanca, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, In a Lonely Place, The Caine Mutiny and a handful of other indelible turns.
A film-length commentary by Bogart biographer Eric Lax is academic but accessible and informative, while the first disc is rounded out with a gallery of trailers for the Bogie flicks The Petrified Forest, Angels with Dirty Faces, The Roaring Twenties, They Drive By Night, High Sierra, The Maltese Falcon, Casablanca, To Have and Have Not, The Big Sleep, Dark Passage, Key Largo, and The Treasure of the Sierra Madre.
Humphrey Bogart, forever associated with tough-hero roles in films like Casablanca and The Big Sleep , gave some of his best performances in darker roles (e.g., The Caine Mutiny, High Sierra).
