The popularity of Conan the Barbarian peaked during the early 1980s, with no fewer than three monthly comic books to go along with the books and the first Arnold Schwarzenegger movie .
With the exception of a few movie references?the dialogue and one-sheet from 1984's "Red Dawn" is recalled; a romantic scene is staged to mimic 1984's "Sixteen Candles," and go-to '80s bad guy William Zabka (1984's "The Karate Kid") gets a familiar sort of role?and a handful of time-specific jokes (one girl asks what e-mail is, while a walk-on character carries a cell phone the size of a large brick), "Hot Tub Time Machine" really doesn't take satisfactory advantage of its time-travel storyline.
Think Conan the Barbarian clashing with the gods of Clash of the Titans who are conquering Mars, Gladiator style.
September brings the higher trash like Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive, which is every bit as dumb as August’s Conan the Barbarian but awash in neon-lit nightscapes and existential dread, with killings so graphic that you can’t entirely believe what you’re gagging at.
Shannon is his link between the jobs, which becomes problematic once they get involved with a pair of high-end criminals with notable cruel streaks: Bernie Rose (Albert Brooks), a former Hollywood producer (doubtless a swimming-with-the-sharks in-joke, and a funny one), and his crude partner Nino (Ron Perlman, and it's nice to see him back from the valley of Conan the Barbarian).

Based on a novel by Michael Crichton, John McTiernan's The 13th Warrior is like a lost member of the Swordplay genre from the early 1980s that spawned such titles as Excalibur (1981) and Conan the Barbarian (1982).
After starring in a quickly forgotten reboot of Conan The Barbarian in 2011, Momoa ‘s headlining of big-budget films once seemed to be long gone, but following his string of successes on TV and now this, it’s great to see him back in a true lead role, especially in a movie that showcases all the best attributes he brings as an actor and just as a screen presence.
This isn’t the first Hollywood attempt to turn Momoa into a bankable star – does anyone else remember the reboot of Conan the Barbarian he did in 2011?
He’s certainly the direct opposite of the titular character Momoa played in the disastrous 2011 flop Conan the Barbarian , an action figure who suffered from having no personality at all.
As I watched The Northman, I couldn’t help but think of Conan the Barbarian, not necessarily the Arnold Schwarzenegger or Jason Momoa movies, as much as the Robert E. Howard books and the many comic books I read as a kid.

John Milius did something similar with his Conan the Barbarian – it’s not a direct adaptation of Robert E. Howard’s stories, but it gets the spirit of his work exactly right, and so does Stanley.
As for Ron Perlman's (2011's " Conan the Barbarian ") black-market monster parts dealer Hannibal Chau, he is a welcome addition when he first comes on the screen, then gets little to do beyond spit out the occasional one-liner."Pacific…
The director is given to masking his true (if perhaps unconscious) intentions with pretentious placards like "Time Destroys Everything" and Nietzsche's "That which does not kill us makes us stronger"—which he apparently picked up not from the original text but from the screenplay of Conan the Barbarian(1982).
This explains The Immortan's need to breed, one son, Rictus Erectus (Nathan Jones, 2011's "Conan the Barbarian"), a bulked up man child, the other, Corpus Colossus (bone brittle disease sufferer Quentin Kenihan), an intellect trapped in a stunted body.

If The Wind and the Lion or Robin Hood (MGM's not Costner's) or Spartacus are your kind of films, Braveheart will delight.
The film also delivers its share of romance (with Wallace's wife, and also as he seduces the enemy Princess, played by Sophie Marceau), and there's a lot said about honor as opposed to treachery, but ultimately this rather simplistic and brutal film owes more to "Conan the Barbarian" than to "Lawrence of Arabia".
His presence is a sure sign that we’re not going to lurch into the kind of “Conan the Barbarian” depravity that could have made the movie cheesy fun instead of the joyless grind that it is.
Gods of Egypt has about as much to do with the reality of life in ancient Egypt as Conan the Barbarian had to do with the reality of life in the Dark Ages.

Plot
By design, it's an amalgam of "Star Wars," "Conan the Barbarian," and the "Indiana Jones" series, only not nearly as exhilarating as any of the above.
Peninsula still holds a number of pleasures; the thrust of the plotting involves desperate mercenaries performing a heist inside a warzone (in the early scenes it briefly appeared like this was going to be a Kelly’s Heroes take on the zombie movie, which is all I’ll be thinking about for a few weeks now), as well as a zombie sport/gladiator coliseum that looks like it could belong in a Mad Max or Conan the Barbarian movie.

If Tolkien had wanted to write about a race of supermen, he would have written a Middle-Earth version of "Conan the Barbarian."
No one has tried a revisionist take on the gnashing-teeth, sweaty-torso, clanging-steel epic since Arnold Schwarzenegger crushed all the consonants under his sandaled feet in "Conan the Barbarian" almost 20 years ago.
