Scott seems contented to repeat what feels to be the exact same beats in this milieu, mounting a toxic mentor/slave relationship between Mescal and Washington, which plays similar to the Russell Crowe/Oliver Reed dynamic of the first film, and doubling up on nasty, sniveling emperors Geta and Caracalla, who are portrayed as spineless, mildly incestuous madmen by Joseph Quinn (resembling Robert Downey Jr. in his Less Than Zero era) and Fred Hechinger (who gets to anoint a primate the same way Caligula memorialized his beloved horse).
So far, it seems like a fairly mundane tale of cool, alienated young-adulthood, in the vein of Less Than Zero or a hundred other novels and movies.
Younger audiences lured by the promise of Disney Channel royalty doing very un-Disney things will have found their Less Than Zero.
Intentionally or not, it’s a perfect dramatization of the much-derided opening line of Bret Easton Ellis’s Less Than Zero: “People are afraid to merge on freeways in Los Angeles.”

Playing a down-and-out drug addict is a rite of passage for a young actor, from Al Pacino in "The Panic In Needle Park" to Robert Downey Jr. in "Less Than Zero" to Leonardo DiCaprio in "The Basketball Diaries."
There's also a surprise (at least to me) appearance by Andrew McCarthy, who plays the victim's best friend in the movie (loved him since Less Than Zero and Pretty In Pink).
The plethora of vintage cars, an ’80s-ish soundtrack and the gold-on-white scorpion jacket worn by the main character seemed to spring forth from “Miami Vice” crossed with “Less Than Zero.”
American Psycho is based on a novel by hip cult writer Bret Easton Ellis (Less Than Zero).
I am probably one of about five people in the world who got this, but, in Bret Easton Ellis' "American Psycho" there is a conversation that takes place in a video store relating to why the clerk should know who Jami Gertz is.
Bret Ellis, who also penned "Less Than Zero", another novel about the dark side of 80's materialism, meant for "American Psycho" to be a satire about how people's obsession with consumerism and flashy style only served to numb their feelings.
It's part of the British cinema's big coming-out party that began with "Another Country" and continued through "My Beautiful Laundrette" and "Prick Up Your Ears."
