In Japan, where it was released in 2016, it was a pop-culture phenomenon , grossing more than any domestic film ever, save for Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away.
His greatest success to date was 2016’s highly acclaimed Your Name , breaking records in Japan and going on to be the second highest-grossing anime of all time (no shame in it missing out on first place, which remains with Studio Ghibli’s Oscar-winning masterpiece Spirited Away).
The meteoric success of Your Name in 2016 all but cemented that, particularly when the body-swap romance (briefly) overtook Spirited Away as the highest-grossing Japanese film of all time .
If any film has the right to be called this decade’s Spirited Away, it’s this one.
Much as Spirited Away opened up the vibrant Studio Ghibli brand to international audiences, writer-director Makoto Shinkai's animation hit Your Name lays down a fresh benchmark in terms of narrative and visual quality, as he shows us why he's been dubbed 'the new Miyazaki'.

Based on Shinkai’s own novel of the same name and reframing his usual fixations through the lens of Japanese history, “Your Name” is an unclassifiable experience that starts like a hormonal riff on “Freaky Friday,” morphs into an apocalyptic version of “Portrait of Jennie,” and somehow manages to layer a gender-swapping 12th century tale over the ongoing trauma of 3/11 in the meantime.

The everyday “magic” (shades of “Kiki’s Delivery Service”) is only magical on first sight.
“I feel like I’m always searching for someone…” Ever since the animation legend Hayao Miyazaki announced (perhaps prematurely) that 2013’s The Wind Rises was to be his final feature, fans have been searching for a successor to his artistic throne.
Yet this rip-roaring, heartbreaking YA adventure is very much its own beast, as different from Miyazaki’s ageless Studio Ghibli animations as it is from live-action western romps such as Freaky Friday, The Hot Chick and It’s a Boy Girl Thing or, perhaps more pertinently, from Nobuhiko Ôbayashi’s 1982 Japanese hit, Tenk?sei.
