Blaming the "outdated" media for their failures, they rebooted their animation department, which then produced the computer animated zany comedy Chicken Little (2005) -- fairly successful, but not in the league of the more successful Pixar and DreamWorks releases.
While Disney may have played around with self-irony in the past (the woefully underappreciated The Emperor’s New Groove ), Tangled comes from a place unaccustomed to artificiality and spoofing.
The first few computer-animated films made under the Disney banner, rather than their subsidiary company Pixar, which had already long since mastered the art, were a clumsy mix of efforts that tried too hard (2005’s Chicken Little) or were just plain weird (2007’s still inexplicable The Wild).

To the extent that this and other scenes remind me of anything, they recall some of the animated derring-do of The Emperor’s New Groove, Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas, and The Incredibles.
Not since Chicken Little in 2005, the studio's first fully-rendered CG-animated movie, * has any film in the Disney canon been so desperate to mimic another studio's output: in that case it was DreamWorks, in this case Pixar, and the least we can say for Wreck-It Ralph is that's it's by no means the worst Pixar knock-off of the past several years.
The story follows a familiar template, combining elements of Blue Sky’s Robots and Disney’s The Emperor’s New Groove : A character leaves home and discovers a larger world he knew nothing about, becomes involved in the lives of a cheerfully rowdy family of characters who face challenges the protagonist has never contemplated, and with their help overcomes the machinations of the villain scheming to take over everything.
Kaytis served as an animator on Frozen (2013), Wreck-It Ralph (2012), and Chicken Little (2005) while Reilly worked as a storyboard artist on Spider-Man 2 (2004) and The Iron Giant (1999).
Since the merging of Disney and Pixar in 2006, the Disney-branded computer-animated films have gotten better and better, moving far beyond the forced silliness of Chicken Little (2005) as they hit their stride with Tangled (2010), a humorous spin on the Rapunzel fairy tale, and reached a comedic and nostalgic high note last year with Wreck-It Ralph (2012) (the obvious cash-in of this summer’s Planes notwithstanding).
Madagascar is their funniest endeavor yet, on par with Disney’s accidental, wacky success The Emperor’s New Groove.
