But they make a good enough duo, and Johnson — who can be a lug in by-the-numbers blockbuster fare such as “San Andreas” — is a riot as a character whose bulging masculinity is softened by his love for unicorns (“I’m big time into ’corns!” he brags, while practically tearing through his unicorn emblazoned T-shirt) and John Hughes’ “Sixteen Candles.”
He prizes hugs and unicorns, his favorite movie is “Sixteen Candles,” and whenever the subject of high school comes up, he looks like he wants to crawl under a desk.
Far too many of the one-liners in “Central Intelligence” contain references to pop culture, from Taylor Swift’s love life to “Road House” to “Sixteen Candles” to Jake Gyllenhaal to Denzel Washington to a thuddingly unfunny moment in which Hart is told he looks like “a black Will Smith.”
The combined effect is a good one, especially because Johnson is particularly amusing, whether he’s reminiscing about the greatness of the film “Sixteen Candles” (“I’ll never be like Molly Ringwald,” he pouts) or giving into physical affection (“I’m a hugger!” he proudly proclaims).
Johnson may be enjoying a comic breather in between his contributions to the “Fast & Furious” franchise, but here he’s playing the rare character you might actually care to see in a sequel — a professional undercover killing machine who, deep down, remains the same shy, sensitive, traumatized, “Sixteen Candles”-obsessed worrywart he was in high school.
Sporting a fanny-pack and jorts, and loving unicorns (“the most lethal animal”), “Road House,” and “Sixteen Candles” in equal measure, Johnson’s delightfully dorky Bob may have bulked up since high school, but he’s still endearingly sweet, even if to a fault.
There are less overt but no less redolent inspirations throughout Red Notice — to the Bourne, Bond and Mission: Impossible movies, the National Treasure franchise and the Sean Connery-Catherine Zeta-Jones romp Entrapment .

Films like “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and “National Treasure” were clear inspirations on “Red Notice” but to say this movies lacks the identity of great action/adventure movies would be an understatement.
As in, there is a lot of Jackie Chan’s Armour of God and Nicolas Cage’s National Treasure in the fun, loud, but oddly immemorable Red Notice, the second in Netflix’s run of Reynolds' fight-and-flight flicks after the equally forgettable 6 Underground.
There's the mismatched cop-thief pairing from "48 Hrs.," the party sequence from "True Lies," the clue-solving from "National Treasure," and so on.
Other references include The Third Man , Gladiator , Reservoir Dogs , Raiders of the Lost Ark , and so forth.

Any movie that jokes about the sought-after loot being a MacGuffin, a reference to Alfred Hitchcock's name for whatever priceless artifact set his plots in motion, or has Reynolds whistle the "Raiders of the Lost Ark" march clearly isn't taking itself too seriously.
Some of those, like the Indiana Jones movies, are acknowledged with a cheeky wink — for instance when Reynolds’ Nolan Booth, played with his trademark obnoxious smartass attitude, descends into a vault crammed with priceless antiquities looted by Nazis and whistles a couple of bars of John Williams’ Raiders of the Lost Ark theme.
A hybrid of dozens of other comedic heist flicks as well as “Romancing the Stone,” “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.,” and “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “Red Notice” is a shameless, unabashed, and almost proud derivative effort (one scene features a character whistling the main theme from “Raiders”).

Their bodies wrapped around each other, in the seductive motions of the tango, is meant to evoke the sensual power dynamics at the heart of True Lies .

In the grand tradition of “The In-Laws,” “True Lies” and “Grosse Pointe Blank” — a film from which “Central Intelligence” perhaps cribs most — it finds middle class types caught up in gunplay and intrigue.
The casting is impeccable (no joke, Dwayne Johnson has never been better), and the premise is a strangely beautiful marriage of “Grosse Pointe Blank” and “True Lies,” with a few jabs at Facebook for good measure.
I’m particularly fond of The In-Laws with Alan Arkin and Peter Falk, and a big part of what makes that film work is watching just how much fun it is when Falk unleashes a cascade of nonsense on poor Arkin.
Central Intelligence has a plot that's similar to Arthur Hiller's 1979 comedy classic The In-Laws and a style of humor reminiscent of '80s buddy-cop pictures like Running Scared.
What at first appears to be a fresh character dynamic turns out to be clever plagiarism of the 1979 action-comedy classic The In-Laws, in which a seemingly unhinged CIA agent (Peter Falk) embroils a straight-laced neurotic (Alan Arkin) in life-threatening intrigue.
Filmgoeers with long memories–or an active Netflix queue–may recall Peter Falk and Alan Arkin in “The In-Laws” (1979) exhibiting a similar chemistry in a plot akin to this one.

Now that the legal demonization of marijuana use is slowly eroding, why not a middle-class answer to a stoner comedy that pays homage to "National Lampoon's Vacation" and extolls the virtues of family life?
The result owes a lot to such classic comedies as "The Great Outdoors," "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" and, especially, "National Lampoon's Vacation," in which Chevy Chase reminds his kids, "Getting there is half the fun."
An affable if only passably funny effort that reunites Jason Sudeikis with his Horrible Bosses co-star Jennifer Aniston, We’re the Millers rides much the same highway as National Lampoon’s Vacation did in an earlier era of raunchy road comedies.
The premise is a brilliant modern take on National Lampoon’s Vacation with a raunchier edge and a creative spin on the family road trip formula.
Think “National Lampoon’s Vacation” retooled for the “Hangover” generation and you’ll have a good idea of what “We’re the Millers” is like.
They manage to pick up the weed without much difficulty, actually, but the trouble comes after, in the kinds of obstacles that are familiar from every family-adventure comedy from The Out-of-Towners to National Lampoon's Vacation.

Pretty much every single aspect of Thurber's script is derivative, and while riffing on other movies is hardly a new concept and can be forgivable if it yields positive results, Red Notice is nothing more than a blatant hodgepodge of everything from Indiana Jones , to Mission: Impossible , to The Thomas Crown Affair - the list goes on.
A buddy action-comedy that blends elements of James Bond, Mission: Impossible , Entrapment , Indiana Jones , True Lies , The Fugitive, and many, many more, Red Notice is a welcome throwback to the days before omnipresent franchises and IP, when movie stars and original (or, in this case, “original”) blockbusters ruled the industry.
But anyway, the film is a globe-trotting affair on par with Mission: Impossible , James Bond , and Indiana Jones .
The spyjinks play like second-tier Mission: Impossible (though Amy Ryan is perfect as an ice-cold CIA boss), and director Rawson Marshall Thurber is no better than adequate in his staging of the action sequences.
Reynolds can form chemistry with anyone, and with Johnson, they give off Romancing the Stone vibes.

Twins got a lot of mileage out of the chemistry between mismatched “brothers” Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny Devito.
I'm not sure the visual juxtaposition inherent in the central pairing is as amusing as the filmmakers think (Twins' Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito spoiled us for life in that department).
It’s a little reminiscent of 1988’s “Twins,” which paired up the oddball duo of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito, albeit with considerably ramped-up action.
