The film boasts a fine ensemble, with Hoult, Chau, and McTeer all turning in effective supporting turns (Hoult’s ability to be at once obnoxious and pathetic is put to good use here), but it’s Taylor-Joy and Fiennes who are the stars, along with Ethan Tobman’s glossy-rustic production design (Hawthorne is located on a remote island – it’s a little like if Oscar Isaac in Ex Machina was a restaurateur), Colin Stetson’s literally high-strung score, and the hilariously pretentious dishes designed by chef/consultant Dominique Crenn, including a breadless bread plate, a scallop topped with frozen seawater and served on a rock, and s’mores as you’ve never seen them.
