The questions raised here, regarding the morality of violence as entertainment and the brutality of pitting children against each other, have been addressed before, and to more potent effect, in films like "Series 7: The Contenders" and the shockingly violent Japanese actioner "Battle Royale."
It has the overall foundation of “Battle Royale” (although it is not as intense or adult in nature as this cult favorite).

Themes Plot
While the first Hunger Games movie owed a weighty (if unacknowledged) debt to Kinji Fukasaku's controversial Japanese hit Battle Royale (and Koushun Takami's source novel), this second instalment leans more towards the themes of Norman Jewison's dystopian 70s offering Rollerball .
Thus are shed any of those lingering comparisons to Kinji Fukasaku's cult classic Battle Royale --though, with the adult competitors, the eclectic, eccentric mix of personalities and strategies, and the rampant talk of forming alliances in a harsh, primitive environment instead bring to mind another existing pop culture stalwart: Survivor.
Catching Fire will hopefully help quiet those who decry The Hunger Games as nothing more than a Battle Royale ripoff, as it expands its focus well beyond the conceit of kids forced by the government to kill each other.
Much has been made of the franchise’s lifting from the 1999 Japanese thriller, “Battle Royale” (also made into a movie).

Sure, it looks good, but somewhere along the line, The Hunger Games series lost what little social commentary or relevance it had and resorted back to its high concept, borrowed from Battle Royale premise.
In 2012’s “The Hunger Games,” the conceit of pitting teenagers against each other in a fight to the death was already familiar (“Battle Royale”), but with 2014’s “Mockingjay, Part 1” and this dreary final picture, it’s clear that the reality-TV survival story was actually the strongest framework of the series.
If The Hunger Games was Battle Royale, Catching Fire was Rollerball and Mockingjay – Part 1 was Broadcast News , then everything goes a bit Quantum of Solace in this hotchpotch final instalment.

Battle Royale (2000): Call it the original "Hunger Games."
This is a film in desperate need of a good, harsh edit to scrub away unnecessary nonsense regarding Vee’s mom (played by an infuriatingly wasted Juliette Lewis), her nice guy pal Tommy (Miles Heizer) and, well, everything else that doesn’t contribute to the film’s vibe, which is best described as Detention by way of Unfriended, with a dash of Battle Royale and Nicolas Winding Refn’s electric color palette.
Earlier films such as The Hunger Games (and its precursor, 2000’s Battle Royale), 2009’s Gamer, 1987’s The Running Man and 1975’s Rollerball reverberate – but here, the puppet master pulling the strings isn’t some overarching corporate villain.
Imagine a film that borrows equally from Hong Kong action flicks and The Breakfast Club.

Ms. Meyer’s works have already stained the Cineplex while Ms. Collins’ Battle Royale rip-off is in its second big screen installment.
The biting allegory is kind of like “Squid Game,” but not on that “Battle Royale” scale.
They were and I get that and if you question your willingness to suspend disbelief not unlike the way you did at the violence in “Kill Bill” or “Battle Royale,” then this movie is for and it delivers for that demographic on every single level.

Kitano's words echo a line of dialogue from Takashi Miike's Audition , an equally disturbing nightmare vision of contemporary Japan, in which one middle-aged businessman sums up the economy by saying, "The fittest will survive.
