It’s also worth noting that for as “serious” as Nope is, there so many little touches that made it so enjoyable for me: it shows some love to The Scorpion King, there are a few hat tips to Us (I didn’t catch any for Get Out, but I’m excited to watch it again to see if I can find some nods the second time around), it features Corey Hart’s Sunglasses at Night in one of the film’s best sequences, it somehow thrusts Chris Kattan into hero status with a mere mention, and I’m sure it’s a reference to another movie, but there’s a motorbike rider who truly felt like he just rode right off the set of The Wraith, and all of that just made me giddy as someone who loves popular culture.
But Peele’s movie love, sincere and sometimes goofy as it is (watch for multiple nods to the Dwayne Johnson action vehicle “The Scorpion King”), also comes with a serrated edge.
On the surface, “Nope” is a thrilling time with extraordinary craft behind it and embellished with a myriad of curious homages to movies like “Akira” or even “The Scorpion King.”
Their father Otis (Keith David) promised her a horse of her own, but instead brought OJ in on training him for work on The Scorpion King , as a father-son project.

There is a sense, both through elements of Hardy’s physical performance and some of Venom’s facial expressions, that Venom echoes The Mask .
Venom ends up reminding you of Jim Carrey’s The Mask.
To that end, as you may have heard already, “Venom” feels tremendously dated, seemingly plucked from a timewarp where superhero movies resemble ungainly things like “Ghost Rider,” “Spawn,” “Daredevil” and the likes (throw in a little bit of “The Mask,” “Dude Where’s My Car,” “Weekend At Bernies,” “The Wicker Man,” “Ghost Rider 2” and “Green Lantern” and this is the freaky Frankenstein that’s been created).
Far more entertainingly off-the-wall is Hardy, who appears to be channeling Nicolas Cage in Ghost Rider via Jim Carrey in The Mask .
“Venom” is basically “The Wolfman,” meets “Brain Damage” with a hint of “The Mask,” and the writers work over time destroying every link the character has to the Spider-Man mythos.
He delivers a genuinely unforgettable performance, playing Eddie and Venom like a grotesque version of Jim Carrey in The Mask (or on the set of Man on the Moon ).

When Harley walks into a police station disguised, for no obvious reason, as a 40s-style vamp in a crimson fedora—prior to blasting the place with smoke and glitter—I was reminded of that enterprising but misbegotten early-CGI hybrid of animation and live action comic book adaptation The Mask (1994).
McGregor is obviously delighting in playing a comic book villain with a camp streak, even if the vibe sometimes resembles the cartoonish bad guy played by Peter Greene in The Mask.

Where “Venom” took the fairly novel approach of treating a comic book origin story as an alien body-snatcher horror film, the follow-up plays like a cross between an ’80s mismatched-buddy movie (where the characters share the same body) and off-the-wall Jim Carrey comedy “The Mask.”
Lauren Lapkus may deserve her own version of “The Mask,” but in “The Wrong Missy,” which was made by Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions, she gets her own version of “That’s My Boy.” Which isn’t a terrible thing.
His Dr. Robotnik is reminiscent of the over-the-top silly characters he famously created in movies like The Mask, Dumb and Dumber , and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective .
