Connections, in both directions

All the President's Men poster
Spotlight harks back to paranoid ’70s thrillers in its attempt to tell the story, with wintry visuals straight out of Alan J. ( All the President’s Men ) Pakula’s playbook and the kind of spare and beautifully loaded dialogue—courtesy of Josh Singer and director Tom McCarthy—that Robert Towne used to specialize in.

Spotlight, whose workplace rhythms and quiet intensity recalls another real-life news procedural, Alan J. Pakula's 1976 Watergate classic All the President's Men, asks in a very real way the question that superhero movies make mythic: will I use the power given to me for good or evil?

Those efforts now play out in this terrific film that will likely remind many a viewer -- if old enough or a big film fan -- of "All the President's Men" from back in 1976 regarding the Washington Post's investigation of Watergate.

The obvious precedent for Spotlight —both as a movie and as a culturally relevant Oscar contender—is All the President's Men , but while McCarthy falls short of that standard in dread-soaked atmosphere, he proves to be an ace reporter in his own right.

The Report poster
A rejoinder of sorts to Kathryn Bigelow’s superior “Zero Dark Thirty,” which was widely misinterpreted by some as condoning torture, “The Report” has clearly been conceived in the mold of pictures like “All the President’s Men,” “Zodiac” and “Spotlight,” all of which made gripping cinema out of the daily drudgery of investigative work.

Baring a few questionable artistic choices where it uses a lot of time-hopping and yellow drenched flashbacks in a dizzying attempt to put its entire context into perspective, The Report carries the same energy that Alex Gibney’s Taxi to the Dark Side possessed with the investigative power of Spotlight and All the President’s Men.

Unfortunately, while Gun’s story is certainly worth telling and this is a well-intentioned, solid film with fine work from Knightley, “Official Secrets” is too heavy-handed and drab, and falls far short of procedural thrillers such as “All the President’s Men” and “Spotlight” and “The Post” or broadly entertaining whistleblower stories such as “Erin Brockovich.”

Coming off of the pulse-pounding military suspenser Eye in the Sky, and understandably feeling the need to distinguish his film from a stolid BBC teledrama, Hood works to thicken the intrigue of his whistleblower story with swaths of a wonky journalistic tale (think Spotlight) and a legal crusade (think On the Basis of Sex).

A “quirky” dramedy in the Juno/Little Miss Sunshine mode, but lacking the latter’s vibrant ensemble and the former’s snappy patter, Win Win is indie with the edges sanded down completely.
Unfortunately, McCarthy's pursuit of this happy ending adds a "Little Miss Sunshine" glibness, right down to the family's deadpan daughter played by Clare Foley, to this otherwise sincere effort.

Reality is always nipping at the narrative’s heels, reminding us that hard situations don’t have easy answers, even if we’re watching a movie that is able to soften some of the edges with well-timed comedy and a gentle sense of quirkiness that doesn’t become distracting, as it does so often in indie dramedies of this sort (I’m thinking specifically of the prototypical Little Miss Sunshine and all its carefully arranged quirky outrages).
