What critics compared The Visitor to
Stealing every scene he's in, Jenkins -- who two years ago won an Oscar nomination for his lead role in "The Visitor" -- immediately should land on everybody's short list for a supporting-actor nomination this year.
India makes for more quick connections, although the most notable, 'Richard from Texas' (Richard Jenkins, "The Visitor," "Dear John"), takes more of Liz's getting used to.
And the incidental men in the movie -- Javier Bardem ( No Country for Old Men ), Billy Crudup ( Watchmen ) Richard Jenkins ( The Visitor ), James Franco ( The Great Raid ), and Hadi Subiyanto -- liven things up a bit, so its not a total disaster.
At 59, well into a protean career, he gets his breakthrough shot, as Richard Jenkins did in the 2007 The Visitor .
Tom McCarthy, the director of Spotlight, has a good track record in subtle drama (The Station Agent, The Visitor) and he works lovingly here with his actors.
And, by the way, its by-the-book, baseball-oriented screenplay, credited to the usually capable Tom McCarthy ("The Visitor," "Win Win"), unreels so slowly in a full two hours that it might feel as if every pitch has hit you squarely on the noggin.

Tom McCarthy, who is also an actor (perhaps not incidentally, he played a reporter on The Wire) has become something of an actor’s director (The Station Agent, The Visitor), and that sensitivity to the ensemble comes through here.
I haven’t been the biggest fan of director/co-writer Tom McCarthy, who previously directed The Station Agent , The Visitor , and Win Win , small slice-of-life dramedies that pleased people other than me.

I could always tell that Tom McCarthy is a fine filmmaker and while he delivered good jobs with projects of lower profile like “Win Win” or “The Visitor” or “The Station Agent”, but with “Spotlight”, and especially after “The Cobbler”, his work qualifies as genius.
