Ironically, early in life, Forster had written his own tragic-lives-of-gay-men-that-also-make-straight-women-suffer tale, Maurice, based on painful experiences of his own.

“My Policeman” is fiction, but not entirely: It’s adapted from Bethan Roberts’ novel, which was inspired by the novelist E.M. Forster (“A Room with a View,” “Howards End”) and his secret romance with Bob Buckingham, a married policeman.
Reflections are a visual motif in the film, and at one point we see Tom and Patrick in bed together through the convex mirror in Patrick’s apartment, a nod to the queer-coded classic The Servant .
It’s the sort of tragic gay melodrama that stood out in many a fall film festival in Toronto and New York, not quite Douglas Sirk era guarded and 1950s oblique, but something that would have been considered sexually “daring” as recently as Todd Haynes’ homage to Sirk, 2002’s “Far from Heaven.”
But British films about the perniciousness of the criminal “stigma” attached to homosexuality prior to 1967 have been around at least since “Victim” (1961), and the trifling amount of skin shown here is now quite tame.
The movies have been making the argument that this is harmful to everyone since at least 1961’s “Victim,” in which Dirk Bogarde starred as a lawyer being blackmailed over his homosexuality.
As it stands, the film is the British answer to Brokeback Mountain , depicting a romantic relationship between two men back when homosexuality was illegal.
Viewers benefit if they missed 2005’s Brokeback Mountain , which features many of the same plot components with stronger emotional resonance and consistency, My Policeman pales in comparison.
Whether its “Brokeback Mountain” or “My Policeman,” the trouble with straight women writing gay love stories is that they tend to conflate sex and romance — that is, they think of them as love stories — while treating bisexuality as a threat, as opposed to a liberating identity unto itself.
But later scenes require a roiling emotional anguish of the kind the late Heath Ledger so magnificently offered in the superficially like-minded Brokeback Mountain , and the pop star just can’t summon it.
Compare it to queer films like Brokeback Mountain and Carol where richly crafted characters pull you into their lives and make you yearn for them to find happiness against the odds.
Considering “Brokeback Mountain” was released 17 years ago, it’s odd that we’re getting a less-affecting stiff-upper-lip version now with nothing profound or enlightening to add.
The "Rashomon"-like analysis on how memory is constructed by the clunky switching to and fro past and present dampens the impact of the 1950s action.
My Policeman makes gestures towards a Rashomon -esque exploration of the construction of memory, cutting between the characters’ shared present and their different perspectives on the past as it methodically dispenses details about the events that led up to the current awkwardness at Tom and Marion’s cottage.

This is the kind of plain-and-simple story Lawrence hasn’t really made since her 2010 breakout in "Winter’s Bone."
Strong performances all round, especially from Linus Roache as present-day Tom, offset the familiarity of the scenario, which has been covered in such fine films as Wilde , A Single Man and, of course, The Naked Civil Servant .
Leo Tolstoy’s classic novel Anna Karenina is referenced early on in My Policeman , setting the audience up for a grand and tragic love story.
At first, the story suggests a simple “Jules and Jim” scenario, as Styles’ Tom woos pretty schoolteacher Marion (Emma Corrin, who portrayed a young Princess Diana on “The Crown”), and then introduces her to a close friend, witty museum curator Patrick (David Dawson).
“Philadelphia” writer Ron Nyswaner’s script — which he adapted from the novel by Bethan Roberts, with Michael Grandage (“Genius”) directing — shapes this mystery somewhat strangely, since audiences presumably know this is a love-triangle intrigue going in, and Marion harbors some guilt for her role in what happened (so she mustn’t be completely oblivious), but the filmmakers still want there to be a sense of surprise and discovery as they peel the artichoke one leaf at a time.
Directed by Michael Grandage, and adapted by Philadelphia screenwriter Ron Nyswaner from Bethan Roberts’s 2012 novel, the film takes place exclusively in England’s south coast town of Brighton, where the older versions of Marion and Tom (played by Gina McKee and Linus Roache) have been living a pretty uneventful life.

(It’s certainly far different from the treatment of Andrew Beckett’s sex life in 1993’s “Philadelphia,” which Nyswaner wrote, which was practically nonexistent.)
Harry Styles as Tom Burgess, the 1950s British copper who gives the film its title, has snuck off for a few days’ romantic idyll in Venice with his secret lover, urbane museum curator Patrick Hazelwood, played by David Dawson like he’s just stepped out of Brideshead Revisited .
Seeing Linus Roache as a sexually-conflicted retiree here reminds us he first gained notice playing a tormented and closeted “Priest” back in 1994, and the presence of Rupert Everett pays tribute to his role in making gay characters mainstream, and the career price he paid for being out and the leading man roles he probably lost, handsome as he was in his youth.
The pair arrive by motorboat, The Talented Mr. Ripley -style, and are nearly caught making out in the street by a passing nun.
The beaches of Brighton in My Policeman are slightly sunnier than those of, say, Dorset in 2020’s Ammonite, but the chilling effect is the same.
