Ironically, early in life, Forster had written his own tragic-lives-of-gay-men-that-also-make-straight-women-suffer tale, Maurice, based on painful experiences of his own.

“My Policeman” is fiction, but not entirely: It’s adapted from Bethan Roberts’ novel, which was inspired by the novelist E.M. Forster (“A Room with a View,” “Howards End”) and his secret romance with Bob Buckingham, a married policeman.
Reflections are a visual motif in the film, and at one point we see Tom and Patrick in bed together through the convex mirror in Patrick’s apartment, a nod to the queer-coded classic The Servant .
It’s the sort of tragic gay melodrama that stood out in many a fall film festival in Toronto and New York, not quite Douglas Sirk era guarded and 1950s oblique, but something that would have been considered sexually “daring” as recently as Todd Haynes’ homage to Sirk, 2002’s “Far from Heaven.”

But British films about the perniciousness of the criminal “stigma” attached to homosexuality prior to 1967 have been around at least since “Victim” (1961), and the trifling amount of skin shown here is now quite tame.
The movies have been making the argument that this is harmful to everyone since at least 1961’s “Victim,” in which Dirk Bogarde starred as a lawyer being blackmailed over his homosexuality.
As it stands, the film is the British answer to Brokeback Mountain , depicting a romantic relationship between two men back when homosexuality was illegal.
Viewers benefit if they missed 2005’s Brokeback Mountain , which features many of the same plot components with stronger emotional resonance and consistency, My Policeman pales in comparison.
Whether its “Brokeback Mountain” or “My Policeman,” the trouble with straight women writing gay love stories is that they tend to conflate sex and romance — that is, they think of them as love stories — while treating bisexuality as a threat, as opposed to a liberating identity unto itself.
But later scenes require a roiling emotional anguish of the kind the late Heath Ledger so magnificently offered in the superficially like-minded Brokeback Mountain , and the pop star just can’t summon it.
Compare it to queer films like Brokeback Mountain and Carol where richly crafted characters pull you into their lives and make you yearn for them to find happiness against the odds.
Considering “Brokeback Mountain” was released 17 years ago, it’s odd that we’re getting a less-affecting stiff-upper-lip version now with nothing profound or enlightening to add.
The "Rashomon"-like analysis on how memory is constructed by the clunky switching to and fro past and present dampens the impact of the 1950s action.
My Policeman makes gestures towards a Rashomon -esque exploration of the construction of memory, cutting between the characters’ shared present and their different perspectives on the past as it methodically dispenses details about the events that led up to the current awkwardness at Tom and Marion’s cottage.
Themes of creative identity, mental heath, sexism in the music industry, romantic partnership and family pressure take center stage in this hidden gem of a movie from "Love & Basketball" director Gina Prince-Bythewood.

Structurally, it faintly recalls The English Patient , while its tone might best be summed up as Merchant Ivory for tweens, whose relative lack of exposure to the film’s pedestrian devices are the only conceivable excuse for indulging in them.
