Twenty-five years after some kids decided not to board a flight to Paris only to have Death come for them one by one nonetheless and fourteen years after the last installment, Jon Watts, Guy Busick and Lori Evans Taylor (screenplay by Busick and Taylor) freshen up the franchise with a family tree twist while honoring the franchise's gleefully twisted but unseen protagonist's Rube Goldberg-esque death delivery.
“Final Destination” (2000) delivers Jeffrey Reddick’s original “X-Files” spec script idea in its purest form, but “Final Destination 2” (2003) enjoys the smartest arc of the first five films and has already gone down in history for its indelible highway disaster.

…seemingly enjoying this new wave of revisited franchise enjoyment (Halloween, Scream, the forthcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer) that allows him to indulge in numerous wicked ways for the crowds wanting a break from elevated, sophisticated horror.
These scenes have echoes both of Yorgos Lanthimos’ disturbing Dogtooth and the gripping 10 Cloverfield Lane , but they lack the narrative and psychological richness of either of those films.
Films like Bad Boy Bubby , Dogtooth , Miss Violence , Room , Brigsby Bear and Wildling have inured viewers to the type of plot in which children are perversely reared by parents or parental figures in hermetic milieux, and Freaks certainly seems, at least at first, to conform to this template, presenting us with a little girl whose view of life beyond the door has been skewed by a disturbed, controlling father.
That initial setup suggests something between Room , the family drama where a child (Jacob Tremblay) grows up from birth in the shed where a rapist is holding his mother captive, and Dogtooth , Yorgos Lanthimos’ disturbing drama about a couple who consciously teach their adult children all sorts of bizarre and disturbing things while isolating them from the world.
The story is clever without being convoluted, reaching an exciting, heartfelt climax, and the broader allegorical nature of the themes raised makes it feel like a throwback to the golden age of 1970s sci-fi like Soylent Green (1973) and Logan’s Run (1976), but with a distinctly modern execution.

It’s a bit like Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver, except, of course, much grislier and, crucially, still laugh-out-loud funny.
They, too, began with a small-scale winner (2012’s “Resolution”) before moving onto more ambitious fare (2014’s “Spring” and last year’s “The Endless”).
There are two ways to get out of it, and one feels borrowed from “It Follows” (2014) or “Smile” franchise, or maybe it is the reverse…?
It also feels consistent since Iris was willing to save a Black boy (Jayden Oniah) at a time when “Nickel Boys” (2024) showed the other end of the spectrum.
