The oft-televised The Lodger (1944) is moodier, while 1979's Time After Time is more fanciful and more fun.
A darkly sumptuous, exceedingly enticing murder mystery, the film, directed by James McTeigue (2005's " V for Vendetta "), reminds of 2001's Jack the Ripper saga " From Hell ," or, what Guy Ritchie's overly silly, dull and inconsequential " Sherlock Holmes " movies should have been from the start.
The ambitious script, by Ben Livingston and Hannah Shakespeare (really!), is part "Seven", part " From Hell ", and part " Sherlock Holmes ", but despite its been-there killed-that derivations, there are enough clever nods to Poe's writing, enough literary inside-winks, and enough fun had with his final days, that it should appease its viewers (though, I'm not sure who its target audience might be).
Overall, “The Raven” has a similar feel to director James McTeigue’s previous “V For Vendetta” as well as the Johnny Depp Jack the Ripper thriller “From Hell.”
Imagine a world where the Johnny Depp-starring adaptation of Alan Moore’s “From Hell” was such a smash it spawned imitators hoping to cash in on its success.
What passes for detective work in this leaden whodunit falls light years short of " From Hell " or " Sleepy Hollow ," where the investigator digs deep enough into the case to find a familiar face gazing back at him, a killer who's the hero's psychic doppelganger.
It’s From Hell with less style and less personality.

The film's premise--inherited from the graphic novel by "From Hell" creator Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill--is promising: What if a handful of the most compelling Victorian literary icons were assembled to form a kind superhero team in an age before such things as superheroes existed?
First things first – if you’re a fan of Alan Moore and Kevin O’Neill’s excellent comic book, then you won’t fail to be disappointed with the big screen adaptation of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (or “LXG”, as Fox are insisting on nick-naming it) as it pretty much suffers the same fate that befell From Hell.
It takes a certain kind of talent to sanitize a comic book and then dumb it down, but that's exactly what's been done to this brainchild of Alan Moore (From Hell) and Kevin O'Neill, which brings together a number of great figures from literature and sets them out on new adventures.
Such is the cruel fate that awaits "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen," a handsome but frustratingly shallow adaptation of the comic book series by Alan Moore ("From Hell") and Kevin O'Neill.
The similarity may have come easily to Moore, whose graphic novel “ From Hell ” was about the Ripper, and inspired a good 2001 movie by the Hughes brothers.
Writer/producers Andy and Larry Wachowski ("The Matrix" series) may have given the directing reins over to their "Matrix" first assistant James McTeigue, but their fingerprints are all over this adaptation of the 1980's Alan Moore ("From Hell," "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen") anti-Thatcherism graphic novel.
Alan Moore made quite a stink earlier this year by publicly disassociating himself from the cinematic adaptation of his 1982 graphic novel V for Vendetta, which he assumed – after unpleasant experiences with From Hell and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen – would be bastardized in its translation to the screen.

The Hughes brothers, who also co-directed "From Hell," lovingly reference Trigun anime cartoons, video games such as "Fallout 3" and classic dystopian literature, most notably Ray Bradbury's "Fahrenheit 451."
Yet the force of this haunting allegory from Albert and Allen Hughes (Menace II Society, From Hell) is its argument that spiritual sustenance may be more critical for survival than the comestible sort.
The movie also moves along at a fairly decent clip, thanks to its directors, the brothers Albert and Allen Hughes ("Menace II Society," "Dead Presidents," "From Hell").
It would almost have to be, with Allen and Albert Hughes (directing their first feature since 2001�s From Hell) behind the camera, aided by veteran cinematographer Don Burgess, who practically achieves a black-and-white film in color, and an oddball but evocative score by Atticus Ross.

Soon he is turning bestial when the full moon glows, and the massacres he leaves in his wake draw the attention of both the supernatural-fearing local villagers who want to tie him up at night and Scotland Yard Inspector Aberline (Hugo Weaving, looking nothing like Johnny Depp, who played the same character in The Hughes Brothers’ From Hell), who suspects Lawrence’s involvement, but not the true nature of his violence.
Moving the action back to the Victorian era isn't a bad idea; bringing in a real-life Scotland Yard inspector (the same historical character who staggered through "From Hell") is not.
Weaving plays the same role Johnny Depp played in From Hell , the Scotland Yard detective made famous for his work on the Jack the Ripper case, but Weaving approaches the part almost imperceptibly winking at the audience, providing a little spark to all the mud and blood and hopeless curses.
Officer Abberline ( Hugo Weaving ), a name that should be familiar to Jack the Ripper or even just From Hell fans, comes to town to solve the mystery and take down the beast.
Accordingly, she stands out from the other actresses - such as Susan Lynch ("Beautiful Creatures," "Waking Ned Devine") and Katrin Cartlidge ("Breaking the Waves," "Career Girls") - who embody similar characters.
Just as Sherlock Holmes did in "Murder by Decree" and "A Study in Terror," the inspector finds a connection to the growing list of victims, a ritualistic aspect to the crimes, and clues that lead him to the gates of Buckingham Palace and a grand government conspiracy.
Director Allen Hughes doesn't stylize Broken City quite so flamboyantly as such previous efforts as From Hell and The Book of Eli (both co-directed with his brother, Albert).
Hacked out by one of the twin Hughes brothers who directed the Jack the Ripper potboiler From Hell, Allen Hughes’s Broken City is another feverish, thickly plotted, overwritten and ultimately preposterous tale of sordid New York political corruption in which nothing much rings true.
Allen Hughes is better known for the projects he’s put out alongside his brother, Albert Hughes – Menace II Society, Dead Presidents, American Pimp, From Hell, Book of Eli – and in many ways, Broken City is an experiment to see what happens when you break the pair up.
Broken City, the first solo directorial outing by Allen Hughes (half of the twin-brother team who made Menace II Society , From Hell , and The Book of Eli ), is one of those movies that recedes in the course of its own viewing.
Unlike a majority of films set in prehistoric times, which simply use English as the language spoken (and typically with a British accent, for some reason), the production of Alpha is actually far closer to a movie like Mel Gibson‘s Apocalypto .

Classic survival tales like Life of Pi, 27 Hours, Into the Wild, Cast Away, All is Lost and The Revenant are equally entertaining and heartfelt.
Perhaps films like The Revenant have forever spoiled me with depictions of survival in the face of extremely harsh and seemingly insurmountable conditions, but much of Alpha feels safe.
But Keda is not dead, just badly injured, and here, at the halfway point, is when the film becomes a survivalist adventure, like a PG-13 version of The Revenant .
It’s basically The Revenant meets Barbara Woodhouse, with a hefty dollop of schmaltz, full of clichés (a tense stand-off between two chieftains that dissolves into a chuckling hug — they’re actually old friends!) and hilariously portentous subtitled dialogue (“Pain will journey with us”).

Like Leonardo DiCaprio in "The Revenant," Smit-McPhee's pained expressions are enhanced not so much by raw acting talent, but the punishingly frigid environs in which he finds himself.
