Let me paint you a picture: It’s May 1993 and Walt Disney, via distributor Buena Vista Pictures, is about to release a film co-written by Ed Solomon ( Men in Black / Bill & Ted franchise), starring Bob Hoskins ( Who Framed Roger Rabbit? ), John Leguizamo ( Violent Night ), Dennis Hopper ( Blue Velvet ), Samantha Mathis ( Broken Arrow ), and Fiona Shaw ( Andor ), based on the best-selling video game by Nintendo Co., Ltd., Super Mario Bros. .

On February 1, 2018, Nintendo and Universal Studios’s animation department, Illumination (Despicable Me, The Secret Life of Pets), reached a deal to develop an animated film of Super Mario Bros. Initially to release during the holidays of 2022, the film was pushed back to spring 2023 for additional time for the film’s development.

Jack Black as Bowser is fantastic, and the singing makes you want to leave everything and re-watch “School of Rock.”
For a movie directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, who helmed the genuinely witty Teen Titans Go! To the Movies, and coming in the wake of other successfully meta-minded animated flicks, one might have expected a lot more self-awareness to see us through, à la The Lego Movie .
Nothing about “The Super Mario Bros. Concerns about Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy, The LEGO Movie, Jurassic World) should be put at ease.
The Lego Movie (2014) was released just under a decade ago and was arguably even more of a blatant advertisement, but it was so much better than this because the filmmakers still tried.
If that benign Dr. Seuss adaptation represents the pinnacle of creative achievements, I struggle to understand how the company can not only survive but thrive in a marketplace where the competition has included such masterpieces as Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse , The Lego Movie , Toy Story 3 , and Zootopia .
