In the inadvertent one, the film pays bizarre homage to, of all things, the feminist touchstone film “An Unmarried Woman” by having Christian sitting at a piano and singing Paul McCartney’s “Maybe I’m Amazed” just as Jill Clayburgh did in the earlier film, effectively taking the single whitest scene in film history and somehow making it even whiter in the process.
Even the underrated erotic drama Scorned starring Shannon Tweed offers more entertainment value and sexiness combined than any of the Fifty Shades films combined.
In one crosscut sequence, he focuses on Anastasia as she remembers an earlier session with Christian, a clever dance between past and present (and a nod, perhaps, to the commuter-train sequence that earned Diane Lane an Oscar nomination for one of the genre’s classics, Unfaithful ).
It feels as if writer Niall Leonard and director James Foley translated about two pages per chapter to each screen as it jumps from sex scenes to vacations to home intruders to tailing escapes in a glorified Audi commercial (those calling Star Wars‘ Rey a Mary Sue need to witness Anastasia magically learn how to pull off slick vehicular moves out of nowhere so they really understand the term) to hostage situations without a care in the world if the transitions were fluid.

Romance is more or less dead in studio movies—neither the romantic comedy nor the romantic drama has remained a big-ticket item—but this week it returns in “Fifty Shades Freed,” in a form that is best summarized by a song from the Depression-era musical “Gold Diggers of 1937”: “Oh, baby, what I couldn’t do (ooh-ooh), with plenty of money and you (ooh-ooh).”
They seemed to sprout up like toadstools in the wake of commercial big-studio hits like Fatal Attraction, 9 ½ Weeks, and Basic Instinct.
At least Basic Instinct (1992) knew the tone it was going for and went for it with complete conviction.
Now, I found myself longing for more of the charged eroticism at the heart of Louis Malle’s “Damage” from 1993.
The helicopter crash from “Fifty Shades Darker” was planned!); and a tonally-inconsistent car chase fleeing a stalker SUV (this should be some creepy “Fatal Attraction” stuff, but the upbeat soundtrack doesn’t mind).

Arielle Kebbel of “John Tucker Must Die” is practically the sole new addition to this soap opera, as a flirtatious architect who must be taught her place by the new Mrs.
