It was nice to see some homages to some of the kids/blockbuster films from the 80s and 90s with references to E.T. and Independence Day, to name a few.
The kind of risk which family-friendly film The Adam Project shares along the same lines as E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), The Last Starfighter (1984), and Flight of the Navigator (1986), pushing the bounds of the PG-13 rating in its action set pieces, character interactions, and narrative themes to feel a touch more like Timecop (1994) from time to time.
The many hilarious jokes and endearing scenes between the two Adams feel absolutely effortless, and are made even more enjoyable to watch by exciting sci-fi nostalgia that pays homage to cult films like Back to the Future , E.T. , Star Wars and Star Trek .
He referenced the sense of awe that moviegoers felt after they saw E.T. for the first time.
The Adam Project is a love letter to classic family sci-fi movies from the 80s like E.T. and Back to the Future with nods to them scattered throughout the film.
Not so much the Indiana Jones movies but the likes of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial , Back to the Future , and The Goonies .

Even if “The Adam Project” is a pre-packaged pastiche of 2000’s “Frequency” with an Amblin-esque thumbprint, director Shawn Levy (2021's "Free Guy") and writers Jonathan Tropper and T.S. Nowlin & Jennifer Flackett & Mark Levin clearly have a lot of affection for their humor-laced, family-centered sci-fi adventure brethren.
The Adam Project is aimed at audiences who are genre diehards or too young to young to come to appreciate Back to the Future, Terminator, or Frequency.
Not so much the Indiana Jones movies but the likes of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial , Back to the Future , and The Goonies .
It feels like the sort of film that if it was released in a cinema in the summer sometime in the 80s, it’d be considered a classic up there with E.T. or The Goonies.
The idea of child and adult versions of the same person reunited through time travel is so well-worn that it’s happened in two different movies involving Bruce Willis ( Disney’s The Kid and Looper .)

Moreover, there are no shortages of Star Wars easter eggs and there’s a real Field of Dreams moment near the end.
All of the father/son pathos here was done better in the John Slattery sequence in Endgame – that is, when the movie’s not lifting straight from Field of Dreams instead.
Way before Netflix acquired the film, it was originally known as Our Name Is Adam with Tom Cruise attached in the lead role following Oblivion and Edge of Tomorrow.
