12-year-old David is accidentally knocked out in the forest near his home, but when he awakens eight years have passed. His family is overjoyed to have him back, but is just as perplexed as he is that he hasn't aged. When a NASA scientist discovers a UFO nearby, David gets the chance to unravel the mystery and recover the life he lost.

What critics compared Flight of the Navigator to
The kind of risk which family-friendly film The Adam Project shares along the same lines as E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), The Last Starfighter (1984), and Flight of the Navigator (1986), pushing the bounds of the PG-13 rating in its action set pieces, character interactions, and narrative themes to feel a touch more like Timecop (1994) from time to time.
With shades of Back to The Future and Flight of the Navigator, The Adam Project truly is a total wonder to behold.
Add a dash of Flight of the Navigator and Race to Witch Mountain and you have a formula for a fantastic movie night.
The Adam Project is very much Back to the Future meets Flight of the Navigator with a talented cast and some heartfelt moments sprinkled in.
Reminiscent of ’80s favorites like Flight of the Navigator , The Last Starfighter , or *batteries not included , this heartwarming adventure is a lot of fun.
Or that he’s waxing nostalgic more generally — quoting the 1980s sci-fi he grew up on, like Joe Dante’s Explorers , Randal Kleiser’s Flight of the Navigator and Nick Castle’s The Last Starfighter .
The central story of a motley crew rescuing a supernatural outcast from the grasps of government forces recalls movies like “E.T.,” “Firestarter” and “Flight of the Navigator.”
If you, too, were a child during that era of Amblin and Flight of the Navigator and Cocoon, Nichols will simply make you feel like an adult who was happily raised on that stuff.
(As voiced by “30 Rock’s” Scott Adsit, the character serves as a walking comedy routine — a throwback to the way Paul Reubens played things in “Flight of the Navigator” a generation earlier.)

The movie starts out like Star Wars and then morphs into kind of a Riot grrl Flight of The Navigator and then turns into Star Trek: The Next Generation once it heads back out into space.
The road trips, sci-fi elements and dichotomous pairing of actors all across the age spectrum are enjoyable enough, and hearken back to the Disney live-action quickies of the 80’s; everything from Flight of the Navigator to Cloak and Dagger gets trotted out here at some point.The largest problem remains with the dialogue and the script, which can’t let go of those on-the-nose points about our own modern cynicism and lapsed spirt of invention.
