What critics compared A Separation to
A handful of world-cinema buffs already know the 40-year-old Farhadi, whose previous films include “About Elly,” a festival favorite partly inspired by Antonioni’s “L’Avventura,” as a leading figure in that nation’s younger generation of directors, following Abbas Kiarostami, Mohsen Makhmalbaf and Majid Majidi.
Asghar Farhadi, 49, wrote and directed 2011’s A Separation, Iran’s first winner of the foreign film Oscar, then the 2016 Oscar winner, The Salesman.
His Marriage Story, a masterpiece loosely based on his own divorce six years ago from actress Jennifer Jason Leigh, is the best divorce movie since A Separation, if not Kramer vs. Kramer (which it echoes).
But the sleight of hand is typical of the director, Asghar Farhadi, who has—in films like “About Elly” (2009), “A Separation” (2011), and “The Past” (2013)—shown himself to be a master of disorientation.

But others (think "Life is Beautiful," "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" or "A Separation") are so universally powerful that they transcend spoken language, and become vital pieces of cinema that need to be seen by the masses.
