In that regard, imagine a “Mean Girls” where the gags are safely trite and characters seldom say or do the wrong thing: That’s the boringly amiable vibe here, a risk-free disposition that admittedly weakened several young-skewing movies of late, even worthier ones like “Booksmart” and the “To All The Boys” series.

Sure, this is not something as great as, say, “Carol” (2015), but it does its job as well as intended in addition to contributing a bit to the growing representation of sexual minority kids in American movies during last several years, and I am certainly pleased about this recent welcoming change.
