It’s a combination of wide-open escapades in the wilderness that will ring of “Jurassic Park” (1993) and claustrophobic confrontations that best resemble “Cujo” (1983).
It’s only fitting that one of the daughters is seen wearing a Jurassic Park tank top because it’s right up there in the frightening adventure department.
For the most part, the lion is CGI, and the filmmakers cleverly allow most of the action to transpire at night, when CGI is not as easily detectable, much like the T-Rex attack in “Jurassic Park,” the combination of darkness and rain made that scene near-perfect.

It’s also more fun than Jurassic World: Dominion – or most of the Jurassic Park sequels for that matter.

Not at all, even the best of the best genre flicks have more suspension of belief than desired, and Beast isn’t quite like The Meg for example, which was more blockbuster-oriented and as the runtime wore on, consciously winked at its audience (or at least Jason Statham and Rainn Wilson did).
However, unlike films such as Crawl and The Meg , which confidently embrace the outlandishness of their mankind versus animal conflict to maximum effect, Baltasar Kormákur’s Beast seems conflicted about what it really wants to be.
The “animal attacks” subgenre of film crosses the spectrum of everything from Jaws and The Edge to Piranha and The Meg .
A climactic fight between Elba and the lion rivals Leonardo DiCaprio’s mauling at the hands of a bear in The Revenant for gruesome animal action, though this one turns out a little different.
Not to mention this isn’t the first time journeyman Icelandic director Baltasar Kormákur helmed a survival drama/thriller, given his past experiences in 2015’s Everest and 2018’s Adrift.
Kudos to director Baltasar Kormákur because, love them or hate them, it’s not as if many of his previous thrillers, like Contraband , 2 Guns , Everest , or even Adrift , were known for their subtlety.
The latest one is Baltasar Kormákur ( Everest , 2 Guns ), who tries his hand at animal horror with the Idris Elba-led Beast .

Icelandic director Baltasar Kormákur (Everest, 2 Guns) is tasked with handling the action, and perhaps the most surprising thing about the film is how tight its on-screen events are.
His other big success was Everest – a film in the proud pre-Millennium tradition of name-actors climbing something big, and then almost falling off it for 90 minutes – and Beast feels like something else from the time-capsule he dug up on that occasion.
