What critics compared Capitalism: A Love Story to
In more recent terms, Tanner and Toby’s desperate situation echoes the rebellious subjects of Michael Moore’s doc Capitalism: A Love Story — or worse, the misguided agony of the stereotypical down-market Trump voter, taken for granted and left holding the bag.
Recognizing that most viewers in the audience won’t know the difference between an RMBS and a CMBS, Chandor’s script manages a tight-rope balance between making the crisis generally understandable while also emphasizing the ridiculous levels of computational complexity involved in large-scale financial dealings (I was reminded of the scene in Michael Moore’s Capitalism: A Love Story in which he goes around Wall Street asking people to explain what a derivative is and no one can successfully do it).
But though we’re still down and out, at least we’re filthy rich in films: from features such as John Wells’ The Company Men, Oliver Stone’s Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps and Jason Reitman’s Up in the Air to documentaries such as Charles Ferguson’s Inside Job, Michael Moore’s Capitalism: A Love Story and Alex Gibney’s Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room.
After all, the main audience for a deep dive into the financial circumstances that prompted the global economic meltdown of 2007-2008 probably already knows much of the information it contains; they’ve probably read the Michael Lewis book it’s based on, or Matt Taibbi’s Griftopia (which came out around the same time), or they listened to This American Life’s “Giant Pool of Money” episode, or they’ve seen Inside Job or Capitalism: A Love Story or any of the other documentaries about the subject.
Though it ends well before the 2008 financial meltdown, The Wolf of Wall Street may be the most instructive movie about that disaster yet made, even more so than documentaries like Inside Job and Capitalism: A Love Story, because it gets at the rush, the draw, the very smell of the fuck-everybody greed which fueled it.
