…which feels a bit like This Is the End redux. “Celebrities saying stuff that is wildly out of character with their public image” was funny 13 years ago (I also enjoyed This Is the End!)
It all plays like a Hollywood-in-hiding fantasy in which the creative class’s response to fascism is to gather in mansions and wait for someone else to solve it, quite obviously paying tribute to This is the End, down to the talent involved.
But it’s also … suddenly a Seth Rogen movie? This scene feels straight out of This Is the End, with several actors playing the most selfish and cynical versions of themselves…
Jack Quaid has likened this show to “South Park with capes,” and that’s an increasingly accurate descriptor.
At this point, The Boys is struggling with the same problem as South Park before it.

Ever since Eric Kripke started working on The Boys, I’m pretty sure Supernatural fans have been waiting for him to bring Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, and Misha Collins back together.
The final minutes of The Boys Season 5 Episode 5 matter a lot more than anything that happens in the Supernatural reunion sequence.
Finally, we get that long-promised reunion between the two Supernatural stars, with Misha Collins' Malchemical thrown in for good measure.
I watched all 15 seasons of Supernatural of my own free will (glutton for punishment) and was hyped to see Padalecki and Collins share the screen with Ackles again.

The Twilight Zone reference hanging around this scene — the Burgess Meredith episode, “Time Enough at Last,” in which a man survives nuclear holocaust and finally has time to read every book he wants before his glasses break — is the episode’s most important piece of intertextual scaffolding.

Characters such as Homelander from Amazon’s The Boys or more recently Marvel Studios' The Sentry in Thunderbolts have attempted to use Superman’s visage to subvert and disturb viewers by showing how “real people” would react to being given the unbridled power of a star.

Ryan, who once again flees, also refers to Harrison Ford in Star Wars as “that guy from Regarding Henry.” He didn’t even know Darth Vader is Luke’s dad.
