After moving into a new neighbourhood, brothers Dane & Lucas and their neighbour Julie discover a bottomless hole in the basement of their home. They find that once the hole is exposed, evil is unleashed. What critics compared The Hole to
It is interesting to note however how much the sets for the final set piece is inspired by The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, a movie made way back in 1920!
A 10-year-old isn’t going to understand the connection between Johnny Depp and a Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas reference cleverly inserted into Rango , just like how parents may not find the idea of a bird-riding chameleon as instantly gratifying.
It’s unlikely that the ancestors who passed down those stories ever dreamed that Krampus’ minions would one day take the form of miniature gingerbread men running amok with a nail gun, or a hideous clown doll (shades of “It,” or perhaps Joe Dante’s “The Hole”) who turns one of Max’s relatives into an early Christmas dinner.
Inarritu shares screenplay credit with Mark L. Smith, whose prior creative endeavors lie in the realm of low-budget horror (Séance, the Vacancy duo, The Hole), and the script immediately ups the story's existential ante by deliberately not revealing how long a journey mountain man Hugh Glass (DiCaprio) might be facing, or whether he has any realistic hope of finding any place with a roof over it.
A harrowing tale of survival and revenge, Iñárritu’s script co-written by Mark L. Smith (“Vacancy” and Joe Dante’s “The Hole”) and adapted in part from Michael Punke’s novel may frustrate some viewers who want more structure.
